The USGS reported a small 2.3 magnitude earthquake this morning at 12:35 am in Jackson County, near Section, across the river from Scottsboro. This area has a history of small to moderate magnitude earthquakes that are associated with movement along faults in the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone. Magnitudes of 2.5 and smaller are rarely felt, but can be detected by sensitive seismic station equipment and processing. Recording events such as this over time, helps researchers to better understand the seismic zone activity patterns, earthquake hazards, and risks in northeastern Alabama.
