COOL CHANGE! A refreshing airmass will drop into the eastern third of the U.S... including the Deep South, during the week ahead. Low humidity, cool nights for August. Most communities across North Alabama will dip into the 50s early Wednesday morning for a very nice fall preview.

3:50 PM Thursday:

Over the next few hours, we'll see some thunderstorms blow up over Mississippi and western Alabama. Those will expand southeast through the evening bringing a risk of high wind gusts, large hail (maybe up to golf ball size or larger), and some risk of a tornado.

BE ALERT FOR WARNINGS THIS EVENING.

This is the first wave.

A second round will enter mainly the southwestern part of the state (south of Tuscaloosa) and generally stay south of I-20 overnight.

The closer we get to Friday's wind, the more intense the model guidance gets with it. These numbers are not "right," but Friday will be a dangerous day to be traveling - or doing much of anything outdoors during the height of the storm.

Pictured: GFS guidance projecting 70mph+ gusts.

This is for Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.

Here’s that chance of snow to watch with a possible strong Alberta Clipper system Thursday into Friday of next week.

12/22/2023

Good travel weather Friday and Saturday but by Sunday evening we have rain moving in ahead of a powerful December storm system. We expect the winds to increase from the south Friday afternoon and warm us back into the lower 60s. High will remain in the lower 60s through Christmas day. Rain fall will increase from west to east Christmas Eve after 5pm. The rain will become widespread overnight into Christmas Day. Winds will become gusty throughout the day on Christmas. Some drizzle will be possible early Tuesday with spotty showers possible Wednesday of next week. If you are traveling out of town and are concerned about your pipes while you are gone, it looks like overnight lows will remain above freezing through Thursday morning of next week. You can keep up to date while you are away with the WAFF 48 First Alert Weather App.

Models are coming together. A possible January to remember.

12/19/2023

If I were hoping to see some snow (and I will neither confirm nor deny that I am still 12-years-old in a pre-blizzard of '93 world at heart), this would be the kind of pattern I'd want to see.

Patterns do not equal weather, but they tend to make "weather" more or less likely.

What we see here is the European Ensemble that is extended way out in the future to the first week of January. That big "hot" spot over Alaska and the blue over Alabama mean we're probably colder than normal - maybe a LOT colder given that this kind of pattern tends to fire off shots of Arctic air toward the eastern US.

The other thing to look for is the blue over the southwestern US. That signals an active southern jet stream - maybe, just maybe there's a storm out there that links up with the cold just right for North & Central Alabama.

Maybe. Not even probably. Just maybe.

We'll see.
