In a region where Latin flavors dominate the culinary scene thanks to a plethora of talented chefs and restaurateurs, Mexican food reigns supreme, with a long list of excellent sit-down restaurants, quick-service establishments, bodegas, bakeries, food trucks and more. The late Sarasota-based artist, activist and educator John Sims was remembered through songs, videos and personal tributes at a memorial held Monday, Feb. 13, at @theringling’s Historic Asolo Theater—the date that would have been his birthday, and one which he often marked around Valentine’s Day with events centered on the “square root of love.”

When Megan Howell worked as a waitress at Patricks 1481 in downtown Sarasota, homeless people she befriended used to make sure she made it to her car safely at the end of each long shift. Today, Howell is returning that kindness as the founder and executive director of @secondhearthomes, a nonprofit that specifically works with homeless people living with mental illness in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

If you were awake in the middle of the night at some point in the last few years, worrying about the Covid-19 pandemic, you weren’t alone. Dr. Manuel Gordillo, Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist, was probably awake, too. At a time when so many people feel angry, threatened and pitted against one another, the idea of bringing people together can seem like wishful thinking. But for our 2023 Unity Award winners (our 13th class of honorees), bridging gaps between people and communities is anything but a fantasy. It’s what they do day in, day out, with little expectation of reward or recognition. Whether it’s steering a frightened populace through a pandemic, helping people with mental illnesses find a place to live or teaching kids to thrive through the art of ballet, this year’s winners are leading all of us toward a more hopeful future.
