Updated 1:10pm-- 4-23-24-- The Rancheros Visitadores, in partnership with Wrangler, have donated more than $1.53M to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara over the past 12 years. Raised in conjunction with the Rancheros Visitadores’ annual ride, over 750 Rancheros from 37 states and 6 countries typically gather together each spring. For the first time since 2022, the Rancheros are expected to parade through the streets of Solvang to old Mission Santa Inés on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 2:30pm. Community members will gather to witness a blessing of the riders and a check presentation to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara. This year alone the Rancheros Visitadores have raised more than $155,000.
As the largest contributor to Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara greatly appreciates the generosity of the Rancheros Visitadores and their partners. These funds support research and supportive care programs at Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, helping residents all over Santa Barbara County on their journey, with, through and beyond cancer. Lori Willis, Executive Director of the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara shares, “The funds raised by members of the Rancheros Visitadores, and its partners, support important programs utilized by hundreds of cancer patients here in our community. These essential programs, including oncology nutrition, genetic counseling, and oncology social work, help patients reduce stress, manage side effects and improve healing.” One such patient is Janice, who faced a uniquely daunting challenge during the global anxiety of 2020: a diagnosis of endometrial cancer, an unwelcome finding during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was such an anxious time in my life, but everyone I came into contact with at the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center made the situation as relaxing, reassuring and pain-free as they could,” said Janice. A significant part of what made the treatment easier was the proximity of the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center’s Solvang facility to Janice’s Santa Ynez home. While she underwent surgery and radiation in Santa Barbara, Janice was able to have her chemotherapy administered in Solvang. Janice’s chemotherapy regimen took several weeks, and each infusion lasted between 4 – 5 hours. It makes for a long day and typically patients feel exhausted and depleted, making the proximity of the Solvang facility a game-changer.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed a shooting had occurred and located a 15-year-old female juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers learned a group of young adults and juveniles were hanging out in a nearby park before a second group of subjects arrived and a physical fight ensued between them. The group that arrived second entered a vehicle when the fight ended and started to leave the area. The first group remained on foot in the park. As the second group was leaving the area the driver attempted to run over the initial party of people. This vehicle stopped before clearing the area and the driver fired shots at the first/opposing group. That is when the female juvenile was struck by gunfire. The victim was later treated and released for her injuries. The Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) Detective Bureau responded to this incident and took over the investigation that has been active & ongoing. The investigation led to the driver and shooter in this case being identified as 23-year-old Santa Maria resident Leonel Narciso Sanchez. On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, investigators developed information on Sanchez’ possible whereabouts. At about 10:30 AM, SMPD Detectives, with assistance from the Patrol Division, conducted an operation that led to a traffic stop and the arrest of Sanchez for the related arrest warrant. A subsequent search warrant was served at Sanchez’ residence in the 1700 block S. Biscayne that yielded evidence believed to be connected to the shooting. Sanchez was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on his warrant for shooting from a vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle) and assault with a deadly weapon (firearm). Updated 5:29pm-- 4-09-24-- From the San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Office --- On 4-9-2024, Deputies were initially dispatched to a fight in Oceano. While enroute, witnesses reported one of the men involved in the fight got into a vehicle and left the scene.
Deputies caught up to the suspect's vehicle which was driving erratically on Highway 1 and at times was driving on the wrong side of the road. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle in Oceano, but the vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The Sheriff's Office coordinated with the CHP to deploy a spike strip near Guadalupe. As a result of the spike strip the vehicle was disabled near West Main Street and Simas Road.
The suspect ignored repeated commands to exit the vehicle. The Sheriff's Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded and spoke with the suspect for more than an hour but he still refused to leave the vehicle. Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene to assist. Deputies decided to utilize less lethal force to remove the suspect and deployed pepper balls into the vehicle. As a result the suspect exited the vehicle and was arrested. The suspect was identified as 43-year-old Jacob Epifanio Lopez of Grover Beach. He was arrested for reckless driving, failure to yield to law enforcement, evading arrest, and resisting arrest.

Updated 11am-- 4-03-24-- As part of their ongoing effort to address the feline overpopulation in northern Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Humane will offer cat owners the chance to have their cat spayed or neutered for free at their Santa Maria campus. The free spay and neuter surgeries, which were made possible thanks to a generous donation from ResQCats, are a
safe and humane way to prevent unwanted litters of kittens. An unaltered female cat can birth as many as 180 kittens
in her lifetime, and those kittens often end up being part of the 3.2 million cats who enter animal shelters annually.
According to Dr. Katie Marrie, Santa Barbara Humane’s Chief Veterinary Officer, surgical sterilization also provides
health benefits to cats, “Spaying your female pet helps reduce the risk of mammary cancer and uterine infection, and
neutering males prevents them from getting testicular cancer.”
Owned cats won’t be the only ones who will benefit from free spay and neuter surgeries this April, as Santa Barbara
Humane will also be holding special Community Cat Spay Days at their Santa Maria campus. On Thursday, April 11,
2024, and Wednesday, April 24, 2024, community members will have the chance to bring in an unlimited number of
unowned community cats for free spay and neuter services. Those interested can learn more about helping community cats and Community Cat Spay Days at
sbhumane.org/community-cats. While no appointments will be necessary for the Community Cat Spay Day events, all other visits to Santa Barbara Humane’s veterinary clinic, including those for free spay or neuter surgeries, are by appointment only. Appointments
can be booked at sbhumane.org/clinic or by calling (805) 964-4777 x 205
