The best scout yet was Idaho. Maybe. Probably. Nowhere has never felt as nowhere as being stuck in the snow on a forest road in Idaho. We never thought everyone would go all the way out there. Unproven. Or more specifically: Uncalifornian. We were wrong.

This rally will have some of the most dynamic roads of any of our rallies yet and we’re excited to share them all with you. Sunrise in Monument valley on the Overcrest Redux Rally. It’s a 5:00 am Day 1 wake up call and driving in is pitch black. The reward for bleary eyes comes at 6:09 am as the sun climbs over the horizon like a slow curtain pull. It’s the perfect way to start a rally day.

With a few days of exploration behind us, the drivers are gearing up for another day of adventure in southern Utah. Solitude and expanse is the norm on these roads. Out here there is enough nothing that it feels like something. That something is different for everyone but whenever you are in the route it’s yours.

The Jägermeister livery is one of the most iconic and recognizable liveries in motorsport history. It was born in 1972, when Eckhard Schimpf, a German racing driver and journalist, persuaded his cousin Günter Mast, the owner of the Jägermeister distillery, to sponsor his Porsche 914/6 for the Monte Carlo Rally. Schimpf put some orange stickers with the Jägermeister logo, a stag with a cross, on his dark green car and started a legacy that would last for three decades.

Immediately the livery changed from green to orange because the dark green color of Schimpfs 914 was not very visible or attractive on the racetrack. The orange stripe of the sticker put on each bottle acted as a quick inspiration, and the car was repainted in a livery that would achieve icon status in the years to come. The bright orange color also matched the brand’s logo, a stag with a cross, which was inspired by the legend of Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters. The orange Jägermeister livery became a symbol of speed, performance, and mastery, as well as a cultural phenomenon that influenced art, design, and pop culture12. 🦌

The Jägermeister livery soon became a symbol of speed, performance, and mastery, as it adorned some of the most successful and legendary race cars of the 1970s and 1980s, such as the Porsche 911 RSR, the 320 Group 5, the Ford Capri RS, the March 881 Formula 1 car and of course, the 934. The 934 Turbo was a Group 4 race car that debuted in 1976 and was one of the most successful GT cars of its time. It had a turbocharged three-litre engine that initially delivered 485 hp and later up to 580 hp making it capable of over 180mph.

We pinged photographer for his thoughts on what Sportscar Vacationland is. The following are his thoughts:

As an automotive enthusiast in the mid-2000s, I reminisce about a golden era when enthusiasts supported each other, forming a true community. Forums were our town halls, creating lasting friendships. Over time, these online connections became family, and gatherings felt like family reunions.

The longing for ‘good old days’ led us to the Overcrest Rally, a carousel of emotions that lets us revisit cherished times. The rally is more than picturesque vehicles and scenic drives; it’s about the people, creating a unique bond. Our journey from New York City, fueled by the encouragement of a friend, was an adventure of uncertainty.

Crossing the country, we experienced breathtaking scenery, memorable conversations, and formed a caravan with fellow drivers. The weight of worries shed off like excess cargo as we neared Overcrest. Meeting others felt like finding our tribe, sharing stories, fixing car troubles, and enjoying a welcome dinner.

The bond over the love of driving put everything into perspective. The decision to embark on this adventure, sparked by lunacy, was the right choice. The rally’s start brings an energy of the unknown, planning routes, and hitting the open roads. It’s not a race but a gathering of gear heads from every manufacturer, experiencing a lifetime of automotive adventure. The smiles as we drive these amazing roads, knowing we’ll share tales rivaling Greek mythology, define the OverCrest experience.

It’s a community of all walks of life, enjoying life for the love of driving. For those few days, it transported us back to a time when the automotive scene was about community as much as driving.

Thank you, Overcrest, for providing this emotional journey.

Overcrest Rally / Day Zero: Leslie Gulch. ✏️ & 📸:

If you haven’t been to Leslie Gulch, grab your keys and head straight there. It’s one of the most jaw-dropping landscapes you’ll ever see and an incredible starting point for a 3-day rally across Oregon. However, beauty often demands sacrifice, and the dark drive proved challenging for anyone not in a lifted car.

The gravel road ensured every creak and rattle of your classic car was felt as you descended to the rendezvous point. Yet, all of that faded away once the driver meeting concluded and the sun began to peek above the rocks. That golden light meant it was GO TIME and that the rough road was no longer the enemy. We were able to rip through turns with vigor while our cars begged for mercy.

Our group found itself at the back of the pack, allowing the camera car to catch us in action, and that’s when the real fun began. Multiple passes up and down the road built confidence in each turn, sometimes a bit too much, resulting in some incredible footage. While I may have lost a headlight and foglight in the process I gained a massive appreciation for the 944 platform and what it is able to handle. This was quite honestly the perfect start to what would be some of the best driving I’ve done in my entire life.

We’re proud to announce and their Enthusiast Carbon Offset (ECO) program as the Official Carbon Offset Partner of Overcrest Rally 23. Hagerty’s goal is to save driving and car culture for future generations, which means saving the beautiful, scenic landscapes that help make rallying special. With Hagerty’s partnership, drivers will support planting more than 3,380 trees within the Riverside Fire Reforestation Project along the 2023 route. This supports Hagerty’s ECO Million-Mile Challenge, which will see enthusiasts and Hagerty plant over 50,000 trees.

Along with helping us make an impact, Hagerty will be along on the rally with some special surprises for attendees.

This year’s event will be a true festival, in every sense of the word. More than just the capstone to the Rally, 2023 will feature a collection of cars, films, food, drink, and secret wares at a killer location.

Scouting Day Zero was tough. It was full of dead ends, “whoa nopes”, “where the f**k am I’s” and just enough “yea. This is it”. Putting together something where sports cars can go slide around was challenging this year, but, worth it. We can’t wait to take Day Zero to the ends of Oregon to kick off this year’s rally.

It’s time. Applications for the 2023 Overcrest Rally are open thru June 15th.

We’re excited to make the adventure thru Oregon a special one. It’s going to take a little grit, and probably some miles to make it to the start line. We promise it will be worth it.
