“Many members of the Earlham family are grieving now," said Justice Vaughn, '23. Vaughn was one of the co-hosts of the recent vigil at Earlham in light of the Georgia shooting last week. Reporter Andrew Adie, '22, covers the event, quotes from Vaughn, and the speeches given in the latest post at the link below: http://earlhamword.com/index.php/vigil-hosted-at-earlham-in-light-of-georgia-shooting/

Today, Earlham College President Anne Houtman and Interim Academic Dean James Logan both made statements via email to the entire student body about the recent violence in Georgia.

At The Word, we stand in solidarity with the AAPI Community at Earlham and around the world.

Hello, everyone! I am Eleanor Baker, and I am the new editor of The Word. I am excited to continue the work of Zafreen Shah and look forward to continuing to establish The Word as an integral part of Earlham’s community.

I am also eager to announce a few changes that will be happening this semester at the paper:

1. We will be publishing stories every Friday, including an update about ESG every single week. For this semester, all of our stories will be published online, so you can find them at www.earlhamword.com. You can also follow us on twitter and instagram .

2. We want to hear from you! If you have story ideas, corrections, or anything to share with our team, you can message me, dm this account, or send your thoughts to [email protected]. That is also the address to send letters to the editor, so if you make the subject of your email, “Letter to the Editor,” your response will be considered for publication.

3. We want to work with you! If you want to volunteer as a reporter, illustrator, photographer, contributor, or simply want to lend your services to us, reach out via email, chat, or message, and we will be happy to have you join the team. If you just want to see what the paper is about, you can also sit in on one of our weekly team meetings.

The newspaper is an excellent way to get involved on campus, and even see your name in print (digitally, of course). Again, feel free to get in contact any way.

We had our first two stories of the semester go live today. One is about the the changes to winter break housing, by reporter Lily Mura, and the other is the weekly student government update by me, Eleanor Baker. I hope you check them both out.

Here's to a great semester!

This year, amid budget and pandemic concerns, Earlham College announced that it was charging for winter break housing.

"In response to student concerns about housing costs, Washington-Lacey explained that the $20 charge, 'does not even begin to touch the costs and it was never intended to cover all the costs.' She added, 'Students have said, well, I can stay in a hotel for less than $20 a night. That’s a choice you can make.'"

Read about the lead-up to and aftermath of the college's decision in the latest story by reporter Lily Mura, '23:
