On this day 40 years ago “Friday Night Videos” premiered on NBC. For many music fans, like myself, who did not get MTV at the time this was how we first saw many music videos from our favorite bands. The show would air until 2002, although it was renamed “Late Friday” the last two years.

This was such a cool movie & it Still has me Steal the Air!

'Pump Up the Volume' talked hard for the first time on Home Video this week in 1991 - after an August 22, 1990 theatrical release.

This is the movie that I credit for ushering in my 1990's. The post-Hughesian teen dramedies of the late 80's were getting a tad gimmicky, formulaic and Patrick Dempsey'd for my taste. More iconoclastic and introspective fare like 'How I got Into College' or 'Say Anything' were starting to tap into my very specific well of Generation X ennui, but it wasn't until the Slater Teen Angst Trilogy (the Slat-AT: Heathers (88), Gleaming The Cube (89), Pump Up The Volume) that I truly felt the generational landscape shift. This movie’s protag (Mark Hunter) really sets the tone for the coming wave of slacker anti-establishmentarianism where misfits, outcasts and oddballs were the new cool.

For my rental dollar, Director Allan Moyle (who also did Empire Records and Times Square) created a seminal Voice-Of-A-Generation movie that belongs in the company of Easy Rider or Rebel Without A Cause. It looks good on the shelf next to films like SFW and SLC Punk, but it’s also right at home next to the aloof indie-cred of early-90's Smith, O. Russell, Araki or Linklater.

Eat your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark.
