I attended a meeting this morning, one I was REALLY excited about - and I had to leave because the speaker at one point made a comment about how he's not a part of a 12-step program like AA because he doesn't have a "negative problem he needs to address and because it's a 'scarlet letter' to people and a secret"... First, it's not a secret. Back when AA was formed, because such a malady was not socially acceptable and people didn't know how to handle it, the met in secret, anonymously because your alcoholism could get you fired, even sober! It also was because people were learning how to grow from something that was so destructive and no direction. Imagine in a time when you didn't have access to previous cases, understanding or history. AA and it's members are not a "scarlet letter" or a "secret" we are a group of people who's experiences are the same. And what's funny is as he spoke, I could see where he infact has things that he does that replicate a 12-step program. And sadly, the other advocate for recovery said that they don't "shove 12-step programs down your throat"...man. We MUST be cautious how we help people recover. Just because "sober curious" is the thing these days, doesn't mean there aren't people with real addiction issues that don't thrive on 12 steps. Sometimes, 12 steps are the only things that save our lives. If you have a problem drinking/using, you are covering up something. I promise. If you have to hide your behavior, if you have to excuse it, you are infact and addict. Please be careful when you speak to people about addiction. It's not our place to tell people what they have to do. Like being a Christian, we lead by example, we do not govern, we do not tell people how to live their lives, we simply set the example of what life can look like in recovery. I am so frustrated and will not be going back to that meeting for a bit.

They say when you experience trauma you are stunted at the age you experienced the trauma. So it only makes sense that when I sobered up I had some growing up to do, but if I was “still acting like I was 16” I wouldn’t run a successful non-profit, be successful as a parent and spouse, and have things going for me I do. I don’t have brand new cars and I make mistakes but I ASSURE you - I’m nowhere NEAR who I was when my trauma happened, which was way prior to 16. And better yet, I’ve forgiven those who caused me to be “stunted” at my age, because forgiveness makes us grow.

In AA Saturday we discussed tools in our sobriety/recovery tool box and how grateful we are for them. There are many uses for our tools, they help us work through people, places and things, they also help us solve problems. Solving problems is something that the addict has trouble doing and instead avoids, drinks/uses or relies on someone else to clean up their mess.

When we sober up - the fixers in our lives sometimes struggle. They find that we no longer rely on them to "bail us out" or "fix/help us" and it leaves them in a state of anxiety. People don't like when we get clean, because we are no longer the scape goat for their problems, we are no longer reliant on them. People who thrive on your "f**k ups" will do their best to "warn" others, get involved in all your relationships, become resentful of the people you get close to and can at times become a threat to your recovery.

Not everyone is rooting for you to recover. Not everyone will know how to handle your recovery - even years later. Lots of people will keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and that's not your problem. The stronger you become, the harder it CAN be for others, do not let anyone de-rail your sobriety, especially family. Cutting people out of your life who don't root for you, or talk about you behind your back, or don't support you, is VITAL to your sobriety - even if they are family. Blood doesn't equal loyalty.

Use your program, your tools, go to meetings and stay in touch with your sponsor. You've GOT THIS

What is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon is a place for friends and family to go (meetings) to find support surrounding being affected by alcoholism. This is like AA for them, a group of like people who experience the same things due to addiction and find support, advice and hope in the rooms. AA is for the addict/alcoholic.

If you have family members (or friends too!) that struggle with either understanding the disease, learning how to manage it, quit enabling, hear other success stories or need help letting go of their own hurts, habits and hang ups, this is the place for them.

Family and Friends go through trauma as well with addiction, and often struggle with letting go of the past after the addict cleans up. It is *NOT* your job as the addict to make your family / friends feel better. it is *NOT* your job to clean the wreckage of THEIR past.

You have done your part.

You have kept your sobriety and recovery intact and when "fixers" don't have anyone to fix, they fixate on your past so they can warn everyone about you. That is not your problem. Politely suggest Al-Anon for them to process their feelings and find a support system.

📣SPONSORSHIP: It is for the Sponsor and Sponsee ONLY! It is NOT for your friends, your family or your boss. There is NEVER a reason for your family, friends or boss to speak to your sponsor unless there is a fear of self-harm and then at that point, there are others who should be involved first.

Your Sponsor is NOT a therapist, or a bank, or a liasion they are not there for your family to "warn them about you", they are not there to "save your job", they are there to help you grow in recovery and as a sober human. period. If your family or boss requests to speak to them it's okay to say, "no", and your sponsor should as well.

My sponsor and I have a great relationship. She knows MUCH more than my family and friends ever will because she helps me through the hard things and how to handle them with Principles BEFORE personalities. This is not easy for people to understand.

If your friends or family are having a hard time with your sobriety, politely suggest Al-Anon and a support system for them. One of the hardest things for family members, fixers, toxic exes/family members is when you get sober and independent you are no longer needing "fixed" and that bothers people. They are so used to "saving you" that they struggle when you don't "need" them anymore. Your sobriety is a threat to people who you used to rely on - don't be shocked when they try to infiltrate your program.

🌿SELF AWARENESS🌿PHEW. right? Like plants, recovery is all about growth. Staying "watered" through meetings, sponsorship and community. Keeping your side of the street clean and doing the next right thing.

Growth is not easy!! It's also not linear. I have a plant that grew crooked, but now it's evening out and it looks so cool! You can see where it was crooked, but it's part of what makes the plant unique.

Self-Awareness is a huge part of the growing and recovery process. It means that when behaviors and patterns arise we are able to see them and as we slip off the rock - we reach out our hand for help and 100 hands reach back. REALIZING who we are and how far we've come, how bada$$ we are is vital to our recovery. We are not our past - if there are people in your life that feel the need to continually bring up your past, or your behaviors or your patterns - there is an insecurity with them.

IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE BELIEVE IN US. If we are doing the next right thing, using our community, keeping our side of the street clean, fixing small problems before they get big, and going to meetings, then what other people (family, bosses, friends, etc) do not matter. Do NOT let someone else's projections and insecurities stop YOUR growth.

What is something that sobriety has given you either (a) back or (b) for the first time. For me it's been faith. Learning to let go and trust my higher power - who I call God - and his plan, his time. I learn to trust that the place he has created for me is littered with potential and I need to continue to do the next right thing. *xy

Welcome to Monday's are the worst because we have to recalibrate back from the weekends. The best part is that we don't have to worry about going into work hungover, but we still need to make sure that we are giving ourselves time and grace. Our bodies don't do well with knee jerk reactions, so take your time wake up, meditate, pray, do your gratitude session and have your morning beverage whether it's protein, coffee, tea, juice...the way we start our day, makes it easier to go back when stuff goes wrong and reset. *xy

In order to heal from psychological and emotional trauma, you'll need to resolve the unpleasant feelings and memories you've long avoided, discharge pent-up “fight-or-flight” energy, learn to regulate strong emotions, and rebuild your ability to trust other people. That being said, an important part of recovery is counseling. I am not going to TELL you what to do, but I can heavily suggest that this is VITAL, specifically if your fourth and fifth and then eighth and ninth step are difficult. Having the tools from a professional on how to process the trauma is important.

Part of recovery is giving away our message of experience, strength and hope. We must remember that everyone recovers differently. When working in recovery to help people, we must remember the principles ... and remember that principles come BEFORE personality.

Sobriety is not recovery. Recovery is what we are in when we are constantly growing and moving towards a change in life and behavior. Having a program centered AROUND Recovery is vital. Being able to have all the tools to handle the ups and downs of life comes from going to meetings, getting a sponsor and not drinking. Do those things and the rest will come.
