Today on July 4 in the United States of America, 🇺🇸 we celebrate the Declaration of Independence and the founding of a country based on the idea that "all men are created equal." In 1789 the Constitution would form the framework of the federal government, its many powers and responsibilities and the rights and responsibilities of state governments.
Former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm from New York City and America’s first Black congresswoman and presidential candidate in 1972, would observe during the debate on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970: “The Constitution they wrote was designed to protect the rights of white, male citizens. As there were no Founding Fathers, there were no founding mothers – a great pity, on both counts. It is not too late to complete the work they left undone. Today, here, we should start to do so.”
If you have not seen Shirley Chrisholm’s documentary, hopefully we will acquire it for Busy Moms TV! She was not a mom, but a great role model for women and girls.
We need more women and moms to lead this country!
How are you celebrating Independence, women’s rights, and freedom today?
