Good Morning. Here are your good news stories for Friday December 8th, 2023
1. A judge in California got tired of sending young people to prison, because there, they just learn to become harder criminals. So he created an alternative . . . transforming an old juvenile detention center into a vocational training facility, culinary academy, and school . . . only for adolescent offenders.
Critics have questioned the sustainability, but the judge says it costs just $25,000 to put a kid through his program, compared to the $110,000 it costs to house them in prison. This isn't brand new, it's been a work in progress for 20 years.
2. A recent contestant on "Deal or No Deal" in the U.K. talked about having a terminal illness on the show . . . but he only won about $5. So a viewer started a GoFundMe for the guy, and it's raised over $125,000.
3. A carpet cleaner was at a client's house, and noticed that there was a baby OWL inside their Christmas tree. The homeowner was shocked, since they've had the tree for days . . . and they even have dogs. The cleaner carefully removed the owl, and released it outside.

1. A 17-year-old in Stockton, California named Elle Gianelli is doing her Socks4Seniors campaign again for the holidays. She sends "silly socks" and kind notes to nursing homes around the country just to make people smile.
She started doing it in 7th grade. In the past four years, she's sent nearly 5,000 pairs of socks to 92 nursing homes across 48 states. She raises money for it on GoFundMe if you want to help her out.
2. A woman in Texas spent a full month trying to catch a stray dog with a plastic jug stuck on his head. She finally did . . . and of course named him Jughead. He'll be going up for adoption soon.
3. A former Army tank gunner named Jay Tenison got a terminal cancer diagnosis last year, and was given as little as 12 months to live. That was over 18 months ago, and he's still with us. And he just got to cross off the biggest thing on his bucket list this week.
Over a year ago, he got on Reddit and said he wanted to ride in a tank and feel the sheer POWER of it again. He got to do it yesterday at Fort Moore in Georgia.
The 194th Armored Brigade took him out in an M1 Abrams tank and let him FIRE it. He said it was "every bit" of what he remembered.

1. Every year for almost two decades, the Christmas Spirit Foundation has been doing something called Trees for Troops. They partner with tree farms and FedEx to bring thousands of Christmas trees to U.S. military bases all over the world.
FedEx announced they just delivered their 300,000th tree for the program last Friday to Fort Liberty in North Carolina. Most of this year's other donated trees got picked up yesterday and should be delivered next week.
2. A guy in Georgia says his Apple Watch recently saved his life. He was hiking with his dogs . . . Cinnamon and Sugar . . . when they saw a coyote, knocked him down, and broke his femur. He couldn't reach his phone, but his watch detected the fall and helped him call 9-1-1.
3. Government workers in New Hampshire showed up to a lake to remove an old dock last Thursday, and ended up saving a guy's life instead. He didn't have a life jacket on when his jet ski sunk, and he was drowning in pretty cold water.
They grabbed a kayak and a canoe, and got to him just in time. One of them wanted to remind people it's probably too late in the year to be out jet skiing.

1. A woman in California is going viral after her pet tortoise named Tiptoe just celebrated his 22nd birthday. When she was 7, she asked Santa for an African tortoise, and he delivered. They can live up to 100 years.
2. In other tortoise news: The oldest living land animal in the world celebrated a birthday yesterday. Jonathan the tortoise lives on an island in the South Atlantic and turned 191 on Monday. His species has an average lifespan of 150 years.
3. How heartbreaking would this be? A guy in Raleigh, North Carolina named Joshua Allen bought a lottery ticket last month and missed the jackpot by ONE number. He matched four of five, and only took home 250 bucks.
But don't feel bad for him. A week later, he bought another ticket . . . matched ALL FIVE numbers that time . . . and won over 660 GRAND. He took home $472,000 after taxes. He's planning to pay off his student loans and buy a house.

1. Firefighters in Minnesota crawled out onto a frozen lake to save a deer that fell through the ice. It was a pretty big buck. In the video, it looks like one of its hooves poked through, and then it couldn't pull it back out. So it just laid down.
The firefighters tied ropes to themselves in case they fell through, but luckily they didn't. They managed to save the deer, and it ran off into the woods.
2. A guy in Pittsburgh was playing poker at a casino on Tuesday and suffered the worst beat you'll ever see. He had four aces and lost to a royal flush. But then he ended up winning big anyway.
The casino has something called a "Bad Beat Jackpot", where everyone at the table wins money. It was sitting at over $900,000 when it happened, and he got 40% of that . . . over 350 GRAND. The guy with the royal flush got 30%, or $270,000. The other three people at the table split the rest, about $45,000 each.
3. A guy in Austin, Texas named Joe Rotunda recently lost his dog Fred after 13 years, and decided it was time to adopt again. And he went way above and beyond for a dog no one else wanted.
Her name is Alva. She has something called wobbler syndrome that makes it hard to walk. And because of it, she was really defensive and didn't like people. But Joe won her over by visiting her every day for two months.
She eventually started to trust him, and he took her in. He officially adopted her in September, and she's doing great. She's quickly become best friends with another dog he has named Max.

1. It's not clear where this happened, but a video of a very compassionate neighbor is making the rounds. He lives next to an old lady, who kept coming over in the middle of the night to complain about some rope lights he put up.
She claimed they were keeping her awake, even though it sounds like that's probably not true. But in the end, he offers to turn them off by 10:00 PM every night. Then he invites her to come over for dinner anytime she feels lonely.
2. Last Friday, Barstool Sports posted a photo of an Oklahoma Sooners fan cheering at their game against TCU. And people online made fun of him, because he's missing some teeth. But one person had the opposite reaction.
A guy named Brett Francis was also at the game, and he's a dentist. He asked people online to help track the guy down, and he's now fixing his teeth for free. It sounds like he should have his new smile by Christmas.
Good Morning. Here are your good news stories for Thursday November 30th, 2023
1. A tunnel that was under construction in northern India collapsed during a landslide this month, and 41 construction workers were trapped. But after 17 days and a massive rescue effort, all 41 made it out alive on Monday.
2. A woman in New Hampshire accidentally threw her wedding ring in the trash and didn't realize until it was already at the dump. But workers managed to find it for her last Friday, and she got it back.
She was lucky they had some experience with this. It's the third ring they've found for people, just in the past two years. They say this one missed going to the incinerator by about 15 minutes.
3. A lot of people missed this story over the Thanksgiving break: Last Thursday, a half-built high-rise in England caught fire. And a very skilled crane operator saved a construction worker stuck on the roof.
He saw him signaling for help, attached a cage to the crane, and lifted it up so the guy could climb in. A two-minute video has been making the rounds online. You can tell how dire it was just listening to the people in the background.
The crane operator is 65-year-old Glen Edwards.
Good News Stories for Wednesday November 29th, 2023
1. Someone gave a food bank near Seattle $800,000 to help them expand and move into a bigger facility. The donor was described as a "generous businessman" who wants to remain anonymous.
2. A 15-year-old girl in California named Madison Atkinson was a HERO on Thanksgiving, after she helped a three-year-old relative, who was found floating face down in a pool. The little girl's uncle pulled her out, but didn't know CPR.
Madison stepped in and started performing CPR, which she'd learned in a sports medicine class. After a couple minutes, the little girl opened her eyes and started breathing again. She's since made a full recovery.

1. A restaurant in Oakland, California called Horn Barbecue got destroyed by a fire last week. But the owners still held their annual giveaway and handed out 150 Thanksgiving turkeys. People online have donated over $100,000 to help rebuild. If you want to help, their GoFundMe is called "Horn Barbecue Fire Restoration."
2. A cashier in Michigan accidentally sold a guy ten sets of lottery numbers instead of one. But the guy said no problem . . . paid for them anyway . . . and the ninth set of numbers won him $25,000 a year for life. He opted for the lump sum of $390,000.
3. A news station in Cincinnati did a big story on a girl named Raven Whitaker-Smith who got sent to the principal's office in sixth grade, and it changed her life.
She threw a cup of yogurt at lunch. So her principal asked if that's how she'd behave at a restaurant. Her answer was she didn't know, because she'd never been to one.
Up to that point, she'd spent most of her childhood in foster care. But everything changed after that . . . because her principal decided to ADOPT her.
His name is Jason Smith. He and his wife tried fertility treatments but couldn't have kids. So they took Raven in and turned her life around.
They adopted her in 2017. She's now studying social work at the University of Kentucky.

1. The Salvation Army announced its first gold coin of the season. An anonymous donor at a grocery store near Chicago dropped a South African half-Krugerrand in a red kettle. It's worth about $1,200.
2. A pilot for Delta found a kids' book at the Atlanta airport, realized it belonged to a library in Kansas, and returned it. He sent along a letter that said he's an avid reader and wanted to pay any late fees himself. He also sent the library some captain's wings to pass out to kids.
3. A guy in Hinsdale, New Hampshire named Geoffrey Holt recently passed away at 82 and lived a very simple life. He managed the mobile home park where he lived, and didn't have a TV or a car. He ran errands on his riding mower. So people in town were shocked to find out he died with $3.8 MILLION in the bank.
He passed away in June, and his estate just got settled. And here's the cool part: He left all his money to his HOMETOWN.
He didn't have a lot of close family, and his girlfriend passed away in 2017. So he left his entire fortune to help Hinsdale invest in education, healthcare, and recreational activities.
A city official said they plan to be very frugal with how they use the money, just like he was.

Good Morning. Here are your good news stories for Tuesday November 21st, 2023
1. Stanley water bottles are a hot holiday gift this year, and this won't hurt sales either: A woman named Danielle posted a TikTok last week after her car caught FIRE. And the only thing that survived was the Stanley tumbler sitting in her drink holder. It even still had ice in it.
Now Stanley has responded by offering to buy her a new car. The company president posted a video about it, and thanked her for showing people how tough their product is.
2. Talk about leaving a legacy. Have you heard about this fundraiser yet?
A woman in New York named Casey McIntyre tragically passed away last week at 38. She'd been battling ovarian cancer since 2019.
Before she died, she told her husband Andrew she wanted to announce it herself on social media, and use the post to raise money for a good cause, erasing other people's medical debt.
Andrew posted it for her last Tuesday, with the original goal of $20,000. According to the site RIP Medical Debt, that's enough to buy up around $2 MILLION of unpaid bills. But over the weekend, it blew way past Casey's goal.
Last we checked, people had donated over $400,000 . . . enough to buy up more than $40 MILLION of other people's debt.
