Annie Jump Cannon (1863-1941) was an American astronomer that revolutionized the way scientists classify stars. In her lifetime she classified about 350,000 stars manually. She also came up with a new system of stellar classification, which is still used to this day. Her system ranks stars as O, B, A, F, G, K or M, with "O" being the hottest stars and "M" the coolest (our sun is a "G" star).

Construction of the USS Macon airship in circa 1932. The Macon was designed as an airborne aircraft carrier, which could launch and recover aeroplanes for use in both reconnaissance and self-defense. The ship was equipped with a hangar, which could stow and service up to five aircraft in flight. Aircraft were launched and retrieved by means of a trapeze, and could enter and exit the hangar though a large T-shaped opening at the bottom of the hull.

A man sitting on top of a cracked Viking runestone in Västergötland, Sweden. This image was taken during a restoration of the stone in 1936. Runestones were primarily raised as memorials to dead relatives, friends or loved ones. They were not used as grave markers, but placed along roads and paths where they could be seen by passersby. Most of Sweden’s surviving runestones date from the end of the Viking Age (11th century AD). The inscription on this runestone reads, "Tole and Torny made these monuments in memory of Tore and Klakke, their sons."
