Deceased man discovered in camp near Oregon City High School.

Oregon City High School students reported finding a deceased man on the trail between OCHS and Clackamas Community College at about 1:37 p.m. on Jan. 9.

Oregon City police said that the dead person was found inside a "man-made camp." A deputy Clackamas County Medical Examiner responded to the scene to take custody of the body as the investigation continues.

Including a candlelight vigil on Dec. 21, the "Longest Night" memorial honored homeless lives at Liberty Plaza in Oregon City. Those who attended were invited to bring new warm socks or a winter coat to donate to homeless neighbors to help them through the winter.

Program participants included Clackamas County Chair Tootie Smith, state Sen. Mark Meek, live musicians and people who have experienced homelessness.

The vigil remembered Clackamas County homeless residents who have died in 2023. 393 homeless people have died in the state of Oregon from January through October 2023, and there are 15 homeless people who have died in Clackamas County during 2023.

The Longest Night national memorial vigil has been held for 33 years.

“This event is a reminder of the serious human toll of homelessness on our communities,” said Clackamas County's Vahid Brown. “We want to remember the dignity and value of our friends’ and neighbors’ lives that have been lost, and recommit to the urgency of our work to house everyone.”
