"Smilin' Sea Sprites! Capt. Chrissy and her crew from the Northwest Maritime Center's Girls' Boat Project came aboard for a fun-filled Turk's-Head tying class. Everyone learned the practical and ornamental knot, then went home with their own tarred hemp, Turk's-Head bracelet or anklet, tied on them by a classmate. Two brilliantly innovative sea sprites originated a way to simultaneously tie each other's bracelets! Young women having fun, learning traditional skills at The Artful Sailor. Salty is as salty does!"

The Story of TASWENS and the Showdown on the Sound (Part 10)
Salty Sue says . . .
"After arriving in Tacoma on Friday, June 8th, Emiliano spent the next day airing things out, and reorganizing for the return trip 2 days away. A family of geese insisted on overseeing the process and kept him company.
I arrived in Tacoma on Sunday, June 10th and was very happy to wrap my arms around Speedo. We spent the day taking care of race registration, obtaining the required tracker and learning race protocol.
A highlight was meeting some of the other participants in the race. There was quite a mix of water craft ranging from SUPs, kayaks, canoes, dinghies and racing shells to a few more tradition boats like TASWENS. It was an atmosphere of comraderie and celebration. Everyone seemed to feel like they were part of something special - which they were - since this was the inaugural 70/48 race, with probably many more to come.
Team Artful Sailor's race number was 35 which we stuck on TASWENS and also on the back of Speedo's PFD. The required electronic tracking device was lashed to the foreward thwart. Finally, it was time for a good dinner and rest.
Race day was Monday, June 11th. It was beautiful weather on Foss Waterway. Emiliano had plenty of time to make sure he was ready for the return voyage to PT. He also had time to just sit back, do interviews, shoot the breeze with curious visitors and relax. I think that was a challenge because he just wanted to get on with the row.
In preparation for a 5:30 pm race start, 118 race teams began to jockey for position around 4:30 pm. There was much excitement in the air and ALOT of boats in a narrow waterway. At 5:30 pm the horn blew and they were off. Some serious racers were over the start line in a flash, while the more easy going participants happily started rowing, paddling and pedaling. It only took 5 minutes for everyone to cross the starting line. Team Artful Sailor was in the middle of the fleet and on the way!

"Departure day arrived. Wednesday, June 6th at 5:30 a.m. Emiliano and I headed down to launch TASWENS at the NW Maritime Center, as we had done many times before. This time feels different. The sun was just rising and it was a glorious morning. Emiliano did a final check to make sure he had everything he would need. All was ready. Focused on the journey to Tacoma, he slid TASWENS into the water. We embraced and I made him promise he would return safely. He started rowing south and was grateful for a NW wind. I stood on the dock and listened to Emiliano sing as he pulled, watching him until he was just a small dot far out on Port Townsend Bay.

"Now it's time to start training! We entered the 70/48 human-powered race as Team Artful Sailor. Our good friend, Marty Loken, entered as Team Geezer. Together, the two teams trained for something they didn't even know if they could finish. One training mission was around Marrowstone and Indian Island (20 miles). Well, that sent the message home that they both needed to get in shape! They agreed they were not entering this race for the competition, but for the camaraderie and experience, and called themselves "brothers in oars". Marty supported Team Artful Sailor in many ways. From the very beginning his detailed race strategy proved to be invaluable. The loan of his dolly was crucial; we had to pull the boat from our shop in the sail loft building down to the NW Maritime Center each time we launched. Compared to carrying the boat, the dolly made it a piece of cake. I was also a very important part of the training. I served as Emiliano's training weight on several rows. Glad I could help! We enjoyed rowing over to Mystery Bay, Rat Island and out to Point Wilson on Earth Day with our Earth flag flying. It was in Mystery Bay that Emiliano proved TASWENS to also be a fine SUD (Stand Up Dory). He didn't get the name Speedo Marino for nothin'!
Come back for Part 6 tomorrow ! "
The Story of TASWENS and the Showdown on the Sound (Part 4)

"In the following weeks, there was alot of thought, preparation, calculation and planning ahead for the 70/48. TASWENS had no inwale, so Emiliano attached ropes to brass strap-eyes to create an inwale for lashing gear. Canvas pocket cloths were hand sewn and seized to the inwale ropes. The pocket cloths were extremely handy for holding many items within easy reach. A space was created under the stern seat for a Mantus anchor and rode. Oarlocks and oars were leathered and Turk's head buttons made on each oar. All of these details were done by hand, using the techniques found in The Sailmaker's Apprentice.
Part 5, comin' up ! "

" Well....the Showdown on the Sound 70/48 boat race is over. Team Artful Sailor arrived safely back in Port Townsend at 9:15 am on June 13th, rang the bell and pulled #93. What a relief! Now it's time to rest and reflect on all the hard work that went into the race.
Many people have admired and expressed interest in the details and handwork they see on our dory, TASWENS. I want to share the process with you. Please follow the story as I chronologically post our process here on FaceBook.
The Story of TASWENS and the Showdown on the Sound (Part 1)
When Emiliano and I first heard about the Showdown on the Sound 70/48 human-power boat race, we set out to find the right boat for the race; for promotion and for just messin' about. We found a 15.5' Phil Bolger design Gloucester Gull dory, and proceeded to make her our own. She needed some work, modifications and commissioning. First, she went to Rick Myers' shop for some minor repairs. The dory then resided in the middle of our shop down at Point Hudson in Port Townsend, where we got to work! Ryleigh, one of the Beetle cats, immediately jumped in and gave her approval. The sanding, priming, waterline and painting took us a month.
Stay tuned for Part 2 ! "
