For months, LOOKOUT has been speaking with residents across Flagstaff to understand why Dr. Biden’s appearance caused a fracture within the community.

What we heard from people was pretty simple: they didn’t think it was appropriate to turn their festival into a campaign stop.

Flagstaff Pride told LOOKOUT that wasn’t the case, and that Dr. Biden’s appearance was for diplomatic purposes. But on the ground, it didn’t feel like it wasn’t a campaign stop. Biden/Harris signs were prominent in the festival, with one vendor even saying that “it felt like a rally.”

Arguably, the purpose of Pride festivals is to elevate public figures—including politicians—who champion LGBTQ+ rights. But that becomes problematic during an election year, when the optics of even a visit and speaking on stage can be seen as an endorsement. For nonprofits, that invitation to speak is even more of a risk with violating the terms of their tax status.

There are lots of reasons to go clothes shopping. But for gender nonconforming people, there are an equal number of reasons to not ever step foot into a clothing store: a transgender woman was denied entry into a fitting room at a Macy’s in Washington a decade ago; a few years later the same thing happened at an Urban Outfitters in New York; and there has been a steady stream of stories about people being accosted in stores’ bathrooms.

There was even a “What Would You Do” episode of how people reacted to a trans woman shopping for dresses and being approached by an actress who played the role a transphobic shopper.

So we sat down with Kimberly Jordan, the founder of Dream City Boutique, which is a q***r-centric thrift store that’s entire purpose is to eliminate those barriers so that people can be free to shop without the worry of who’s looking over their shoulders or denying them entry.

The Dysart Unified School District voted last week against adopting new Title IX rules that protect LGBTQ+ staff and students. Here's what that means for possible funding in the future.

The move doesn't eliminate students or teachers from filing civil rights complaints, but could cost millions in federal funding for the district.

Even though Susie Broussard had a wife and solid companionship, she missed being around other people like her and her partner. when she moved to Sun City, the retirement city just Northwest of Phoenix.

For years, Sun City’s sole LGBTQ+ group had kept a low profile—low enough that residents often looked perplexed when hearing there were g**s living among them.

In fact, there were hundreds.

So, she realized that to find friendship and build that community, she would have to do it herself. But there was another reason for bringing the club out-of-the-closet: loneliness.

While the feeling of loneliness from time to time is an inescapable part of life, too much loneliness and disconnection can be deadly, according to a report published by the U.S. Surgeon General, leading to increased rates of heart disease and strokes. LGBTQ+ older adults are especially at risk, according to the non-profit SAGE.

If Broussard succeeded, there was an ancillary benefit in that she could also help her neighbors survive the loneliness epidemic sweeping the nation, especially among q***r Sun Citizens.

🔥🔥 Maricopa county folks!🔥🔥

On Saturday, July 21, Lookout Publications is hosting a community event for teachers, students and parents to discuss the ways that our community can build resiliency through hearing each other's stories. This is the second event with our free Summer of Solutions series, which builds community through giving people the opportunity to meet with other like-minded (and not-so-like-minded) people and devising solutions that can help us all.

The RSVP is open to the public, but it's sure to fill up quickly! If you know someone who might be interested, or want to attend yourself, RSVP soon!
