#86 - Baby's In Black
Though the Lennon & McCartney songwriting team found it harder and harder to truly write songs together from scratch as they got busier and busier, with "Baby's In Black," they were able to get "nose-to-nose" and write something truly different from what was expected at the time. A 3/4 time waltz with a melancholy lyric (possibly inspired by Astrid Kirchherr's mourning for Stu Sutcliffe), the first song they recorded for the Beatles For Sale album was a far cry from the uptempo Beatlemania rave ups of A Hard Day's Night or the Cavern-era screamers on their first two LPs. The song shows tremendous growth and bravery for daring to do the unexpected, and gives a brilliant example of John and Paul's best Everly Brothers-esque harmonies. It's a song they were very proud of, as evidenced by the fact that that once it was out, it stayed in their live show until the end of their touring days. Even in the jaded-slugging-it-out-un-enthusiastically shows of 1966, John and Paul seem to genuinely delight in being so close on one mic and singing in harmony for the entire song. It's a real gem that likely doesn't get it's due since it's a waltz in the 3rd song slot on what some consider their "worst" album.

This week, we close the circle on the RTB X meet up by welcoming Andy Nicholes to the show! After having his co-host Tom Hunyady on the last episode, it only seemed appropriate to have Andy on as well. We love 2 Legs, and Andy was great on the panels we saw him on at the Fest for Beatles Fans, so we're big fans. He joins us to talk about bootlegs, solo fandom, growing up as fans in the 90s, and so much more! Be sure to check out 2Legs anywhere you get podcasts and follow them on Facebook!

For you Julia stans, she's not with us this week unfortunately. She'll be back we promise. To make it up to you, be sure to listen through to the end of the episode for a little bonus treat.

What do you think about "Baby's In Black" at #86? Too high? Too low? Or just right? Let us know in the comments! Be sure to check out www.rankingthebeatles.com and grab a Rank Your Own Beatles poster, a shirt, a jumper, whatever you like! And if you're digging what we do, don't forget to Buy Us A Coffee!

Couldn't wait for the mailman. Went to the record store and picked up the 2disc cd set. The band/mix sounds, and Macca's vocals are the true highlight for me (Tom) We'll be reviewing the set at sometime next week.

Paul McCartney dropped a brand new One Hand Clapping set today, recorded between August and October of 1974 (with some extra overdubs in February 1975). We decided to explore how it compares to other official and unofficial releases.

There's plenty to get excited about here with new cuts, new mixes, and instrumentation that has been restored to some tracks.

1. One Hand Clapping
One min longer than existing version and likely an unreleased take. Glorious extended Jimmy McCulloch guitar solo, and no fade at end.
2. Jet
Same take as the one released on Band on the Run archive edition but a radically different mix. Linda's Moog kicks off the track (which was mixed out in the previous version) and synth is also mixed high throughout. Also looks like a mix of two vocal takes.
Correction. Jet is actually a composite of two takes, one recorded in August and the other in October.
3. Soily
Same as the take released on Venus and Mars archive edition but a brand new mix made by Giles Martin. This take was a remake, recorded on October 9, 1974 as the take recorded in August was deemed unsatisfactory in the edit.
4. C Moon / Little Woman Love
A trimmed version of the medley, cut down from 4'36" to 3'21". Existing versions of this recording begin and end with Little Woman Love. But cleanest version and mix to date.
5. Maybe I'm Amazed
The same take as issued on McCartney archive edition but remixed by Giles.
6. My Love
This take has been available for years but never like this. Orchestral overdubs are now present throughout that were previous mixed out.
7. Bluebird
As per the version issued on Band on the Run archive edition, complete with bluesy brushstrokes from saxophonist Howie Casey's (now front and centre in the mix rather than mixed hard right).
8. Let's Love
Brand new take. Never issued before officially or otherwise. Extracts of this piano recording also feature on Venus and Mars archive edition and the McCartney Years DVD but this is new. Short but sweet.
9. All Of You
This recording was previously issued on the McCartney Years DVD box set, but this new version is 20+ seconds longer and much better quality.
10. I'll Give You A Ring
Again, this was issued on the McCartney Years DVD box set many moons ago, but this new mix is much higher quality and 10+ seconds longer.
11. Band On The Run
The same take as featured on Band On The Run archive edition but a radically different mix. Jimmy's guitar is higher in the mix and instrument separation is clearer. Nice job by Giles to get the most out of the complex, layered instrumentation.
12. Live and Let Die
Nothing new here but a more balanced mix with more space for the orchestra to shine.
13. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five
The same version as presented on Band on the Run archive edition - a composite take of Paul live in Studio Two, and the album version with a live vocal overdub. One difference here, the very end does not crossfade with Band On The Run.
14. Baby Face
The first time this has been issued complete on record (it had previously been available as two fragments). Complete with New Orleans overdubs courtesy of the Tuxedo Jazz Band, overdubbed on February 13, 1975.
15. Let Me Roll It
Gutsy performance, as per the version issued on Band on the Run archive edition but a new mix.
16. Blue Moon of Kentucky This cut could be found on unofficial releases in the past (and was on acetates cut for members of Wings back in 1974) but gets its first official release here. Superb quality and nice to hear Jimmy's guitar solo higher in the mix.
17. Power Cut
Brand new cut. Recorded by Paul during a solo session at EMI Studio Two on August 28, 1974.
18. Love My Baby
Paul dropped this track as a website exclusive a few years ago, it's available on CD/LP here for the very first time.
19. Let It Be
Another brand new cut. Again, recording by Macca during a solo session on August 28, 1974.
20. The Long and Winding Road / Lady Madonna
Two more 2024 One Hand Clapping album exclusives. Both recorded (yes, you guessed it) during Paul's solo August 28, 1974 session. Imagine being a fly on the wall during that session!
21. Junior's Farm
New to the 2024 One Hand Clapping set. A composite take of recordings made in both August and October.
22. Sally G
Another brand new track. Likely recorded solo by Paul during the Backyard session on August 30, 1974.
23. Tomorrow
Exclusive to this set. Another delightful solo recording taken from Paul's session at EMI Studios on August 28, 1974.
24. Go Now
Another track that was on the original One Hand Clapping acetates and has been available unofficially for years, but is presented here in glorious sound quality on an official set for the first time.
25. Wild Life
Another exclusive to this new release. A tiny fragment of this track was on the One Hand Clapping acetates but the full track is presented here for the first time. Stunning cut.
26. Hi, Hi, Hi
It's always nice to end on a high, and this set delivers with an unedited version of 'Hi, Hi, Hi' (previous releases featured an abrupt slap-echo ending). Exclusive to the One Hand Clapping set.

In conclusion, get ready for Paul's Polygon, this album is a cracker!

We will tell the full story of One Hand Clapping, recorded over eight sessions in August and October 1974, in The McCartney Legacy Volume 2: 1974-80, coming December 10, 2024.
