Rocky’s family just got a little bigger!

It’s been such a long road for The Italian Stallion that it’s high time we got some new blood in the ring! This week on the pod marks the reboot of the Rocky Franchise, when Sylvester Stallone gained a new mentee and began passing the torch to Michael B. Jordan in his portrayal of Adonis Creed 🥊 We think Rock makes a pretty good “unc!”

We’ve been on a long journey with The Italian Stallion but it’s high time we reinvigoriate the podcast with a new contender. He is dedicated towards boosting company online presence, increasing exposure for individuals, and promoting overall success. Zach is a goal-oriented leader with a collaborative approach to marketing and projects such as public campaigns.

Episode 5 is so good it’ll knock ya into next week!

This week on Philm Rematch we’ve got Rocky V (1990) squaring off against the Shyamalan sleeper known as Wide Awake (1998)! For Rocky, this entry in the franchise represents a return to Kensington, now infused with hip-hop and the kind of street fighting games that were popular in arcades of the era.

While Shyamalan is now known for that signature Philly grit, this entry into his filmography couldn’t be more different; taking place entirely at a Catholic Boarding School on the outskirts of the city. What that leaves us with is a fight that could be retitled “Streets vs. Suburbs!” Tune in to find out who will reign victorious!

Jalen Ramseur-Williams is a freelance cinematographer based in Philadelphia who brings a raw, naturalistic cinematic viseion to his films. He is a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for The Creative & Performing Arts with a major in Media, Design Television & Video (MDTV). Jalen is currently attending Temple University as a senior where he majors in Film and Media Arts, with a concentration in cinematography. He’s a continuous learner, with a passion to create, collaborate, and provide thought-provoking films now and in the future.

Wide Awake (1998) is the largely forgotten feature from the master of the twist ending, M. Night Shyamalan! We’ll be pitting this 90s new kid on the block against the chiseled Philly veteran, Sylvester Stallone. This is one fight you don’t wanna miss!

After the success of 1983’s Trading Places, the restaurant inside the Westin Hotel at Liberty Place took a new namesake inspired by Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) and Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Akroyd). It’s since been changed to Lea Restaurant & Bar but we’re gonna petition to revert to the name that honors our Philly favs!

Tolani Dusunmu is a creative jack-of-all-trades knowledgeable in everything from music production, graphic design, content creation, art, and digital marketing. She is currently enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia in the Studio Recording and Music Technology, and recently graduated Thinkful's Digital Marketing certification program.

Kayshana Massiah is a Philly Native with a passion for all things media. From music to movies, Kayshana enjoys soaking up entertainment/pop culture from various mediums. Kayshana thrives in creative spaces and aspires to produce her own artistic projects, one day becoming a successful entrepreneur.

We’re about to Blow-Up and act like we don’t know nobody 🦈💥

Even though we know Blow Out (1981) is strong enough fight Rocky on its own two feet, turns out that it took inspiration from another heavy-hitter. Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, Blow-Up (1966) shares a similar premise, only instead of a sound mixer accidentally capturing a crime on audio, it’s a photographer capturing a murder on film. In the spirit of this reimagining, if anyone out there wants to take the model here at Philm Rematch and dig into the Rambo franchise, have at it! Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

Rocky II (1979) had better listen up for our next contender, Blow Out (1981). Directed by Philly native Brian De Palma, this highly stylized and deeply cynical box office flop got a second lease on life when it was later espoused by Quentin Tarantino as his favorite film. Meanwhile, Rocky II marks a turning point for Sylvester Stallone as he balances starring AND directing. Both films depict men growing disillusioned in the City of Brotherly Love, but who is the most tortured?! Tune in on Friday, 3/29 to find out!
