Last September, Gene Barclay saw the dying elderberry shrubs on his property. This brought back memories of picking them with his father and a family friend, and turning the berries into jam. One day, Gene posted in an online community group to find someone who might be interested in once again picking and using the elderberries, and in comes Jill Waldbieser. We may be in the middle of a summer heat wave, but our team is hard at work on our Fall and Winter issues. I’m super excited about our Fall issue - our very first Travel issue!

This Fall, we’re focusing on all things travel, near and far. We’ll be featuring several chefs, artisans and bakers that evoke a sense of place through food, allowing their backgrounds and cultures to come to the forefront, evolving old traditions into modern interpretations and more.

In winter, we shift to focus on women in wine, we’ll profile a local cheesemaker making national headlines, we’ll meet the Philly chefs and cooks queering the food scene, and more. As per usual, all advertisers in our Winter issue are included in our annual Holiday Gift Guide and we’ll have more information on how that Guide is evolving soon.

Opt in for both issues for a special 2-time discounted rate for this year. Take an additional 5% off the total if you choose to pay in full by 8/15.

For more info and rates and to reserve your spot, please email [email protected], comment on this message or complete the form at the link: https://forms.gle/hYSrrrR9GqBtU8Ve6

After a career as a war correspondent that brought him to Argentina, Charles Eisandrath and his family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. One thing sorely missing in his new life were the parilla grills he came to love in Buenos Aires. Eisandrath decided to start prototyping a grill using the traditional parrillas of Argentina as the model, but shooting for more ease of cooking over a whole wood fire rather than only over coals, known as The Grillery. Presently, under the leadership of Charles’ son, , Grillworks has expanded to selling grills for home cooking, as well as professional cooking. Learn more on their website grillworksusa.com

Melissa Lynn Torre didn’t set out to become a soap maker. While operating her former bakery, Cookie Confidential, she decided to step away and focus on autoimmune issues that plagued her for years. These health issues included eczema, and Torre began making her own soap with beef tallow to soothe her skin. This homemade soap soon landed her a meeting with Whole Foods, and thus was born. Since its inception, Torre has made it a mission to source her products from local businesses - even the beef tallow. This helps restaurants offload their waste and keep it out of landfills, all while moisturizing her customers’ skin. Check out the “Local Heroes” piece in our Spring Issue to read more about Melissa Torre and Vellum Street - and check out that cover model!
