Today through Friday night:

Today will see clouds over most areas, though thin enough for some sun in eastern ND and far NW Minnesota. Thicker clouds and the chance for light rain generally east of Bemidji-Fergus Falls line. Clearing all areas tonight and then sunshine and mild on Thursday and a warm day on Friday with increasing afternoon clouds. Chance for showers and a few thunderstorms exists for Friday night.

Turning windy and cooler today. Frost or freeze risk tonight for many areas.

Details:
A cold front will drop south through the area this morning and behind it winds will turn north and clouds will increase and there will be scattered showers. North winds gusting to 35 mph this afternoon in eastern ND and the Red River valley. Afternoon temperatures only in the 40s. Tonight will see partial clearing overnight with lows in many areas in the 30 to 35 degree range bringing the risk of frost or freeze.

Easter this year will mean snow for most. Low pressure will move from west to east across central North Dakota today, with it near Grand Forks by early evening. The low will continue to move east across northern Minnesota tonight but gradually weaken. Heaviest snow with this system will fall along and north of Highway 2 in North Dakota where winter storm warnings are in effect. Snowfall amounts will be less in northwestern Minnesota and also farther south toward I-94 from this system. Snow will end by midnight in eastern ND and Monday morning over Minnesota.

Additional snow showers are expected across the region today, with highly variable snow amounts dependent on where they track, and how long they last. The best chance for 3 inches or more is towards the International Border (60% chance), however similar totals can't be ruled out elsewhere if moderate showers linger over one location long enough (30% chance). Northwest winds will increase today with gusts to 45 mph mainly in eastern ND and the Red River Valley of west central MN. Where the winds and snow showers combine, intermittent periods of near whiteout conditions will be possible through this afternoon.

Confidence is increasing in a crippling spring storm that will bring the potential for severe winter impacts to the region from Tuesday PM through Friday AM. With heavy snow and gusty winds, be prepared for extremely difficult to impossible travel conditions.

Confidence is growing that a heavier band of snow (4 or more) will develop with this system as it moves through today into this evening. This type of system with banded snowfall will create highly variable snowfall rates and totals in short distances. Therefore a winter weather advisory has been issued for parts of eastern ND into MN in areas where confidence has increased that higher snowfall will occur.
