Redwood City: A Voyage of Innovation - The Rebirth of Downtown
"The Rebirth of Downtown" is a segment from Kingston Media's award-winning historical documentary: "Redwood City: A Voyage of Innovation". In the 1970's Redwood City's downtown was sarcastically called Deadwood City. During this period of US history, residential communities were thriving in the suburbs, but the health of many older downtowns across the nation began to struggle. Consumer behaviors began shifting from downtown retail stores to large scale shopping centers typically located outside the core of the city.
By the 1990s and into the new century, Redwood City began to focus on a systematic approach to address the needs of its residents. This process, called the “Redwood City Way” set a vision, enlisted feedback from the community, developed collaborations, and invested in infrastructure. Redwood City began to implement a master plan for revitalizing its' downtown which included a large scale cinema and retail project, as well as a community plaza to be located in front of the San Mateo County History Museum.
After over a decade of planning and construction, Redwood City's downtown was reborn, transforming this once quiet suburb into a modern state-of-the-art Silicon Valley City. Today, Redwood City's downtown is thriving with shops, restaurants, theaters, and live entertainment balanced with residential neighborhoods, waterfront housing, and high density units.
