With LDS names popping up everywhere else, where are the Mormon composers? We asked Jeremy Grimshaw and he wrote this: http://bit.ly/ZdcJUi

Hi Hymns Today friends, woops, we almost forgot Christmas this year for HT. Had to do a quick rethink with our committee and decided to shift our Mormon themed issue back to December and put out a Christmas issue in early October. Since then we have been actively collecting new and unpublished Christmas songs from our wonderful composers. Expect a treasure trove of new Christmas music in this next issue! If you were thinking of submitting something and haven't gotten around to it, please contact me as soon as possible as the pages for this issue are quickly filling up with wonderful contributions.

Community of Christ Hymnal Project

I would like to share with our hymn loving community the words of President Steve Veazey of the Community of Christ. He speaks eloquently about the importance of hymns in worship at the launch of the new hymnal by the Community of Christ. I think his reflections have relevence to all of us who love and try to promote hymn singing within our congregations. http://www.cofchrist.org/hymnal/102013Veazeysermon.asp

I am not blessed with musical talent. I can sing decently, according to my wife, when I sing with other people who have some musical talent. In other words, I sing best when I sing with the faith community. I need us to sing together so I can sing at all! Singing together means I can participate. It…

Wow, we are entering the home stretch for Issue 5 of Hymns Today. This will be our first Heritage Issue featuring the hymns and other choral works of LDS composer Helen Taylor, who died in 1950 in a car accident at the age of 34.

Trained at the University of Utah and Julliard, Taylor used to play piano for Martha Graham's dance company. She was married to the well known pianist Grant Johannesen, and had one son. Her hymns are being published for the very first time.

There will also feature an essay on Taylor by the Mormon music historian and BYU Professor, Dr Michael Hicks. Tell your friends...

Well, we've passed our 100 likes point. Thank you to all of you who have contributed to that total! I am excited today because I received the English translation of the hymn by Hildigunnur Runarsdottir (translation by Michael Clarke).

Look on My Soul

Look on my soul with careful mind
In penitence thy image find.
Lived in trust as is full due
In all my spirit's strength imbue.

Plea from rueful heart expressed
By our Jesus is dearly blessed
Grant, O God, thy favor dear
Unto those whose prayers you hear.

When at last this world I flee
May thy word my comfort be.
There my soul in rapture sure
at your side forevermore

(Hallgrimur Petursson 1614-1674)
