Pink Skies and Butterflies: Remembering Karly Rain Wood

"Karly Rain Wood was a beautiful 20-year-old girl who had a bright future ahead of her. Born on her great-grandfather Carlโ€™s birthday, she was named after him. She was known for her kindness, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit. She had plans to become a business owner, and her family and friends were excited to see what the future held for her. Unfortunately, Karlyโ€™s life was cut short when she was shot and killed at a party on November 13, 2022. Her death devastated her family and friends, who gathered to celebrate her life on what would have been her 21st birthday."

The family is fundraising to establish a foundation or scholarship in her name, as well as offering a private reward for any information that leads to the capture of those responsible for her death. You can donate to the GoFundMe account here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/our-perfect-queen-karly-rain.

Bring Earnest Jackson Home: Advocating For Equitable Justice In The Criminal Justice System

โ€œThe system isnโ€™t failsafe, mistakes can happen,โ€ said Daniel Medwed, law professor at Northeastern University, founding board member of the Innocence Network and lawyer involved in Jacksonโ€™s case. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t mean people did things wrong, but we need to give these cases a close second look.โ€

Uncovering The History Of The Urban League Of Nebraska: A Unique Approach To Civil Rights Advocacy

The Urban League was founded in 1927 by a group of African American community leaders who recognized the need for economic development and social justice in their community. The organization was initially called the Urban League of Omaha, but it was later renamed the Urban League of Nebraska to reflect its statewide focus.

The organizationโ€™s early work focused on job training and placement, but it quickly expanded to address other economic and social issues facing the African American community.

From Street Dances to Shootouts: The Colorful Past of Sheelytown

Many longtime residents of Omaha may not have even heard of this part of town, which is located on the East side of Highway 75 between Vinton and Martha. It is an historic ethnic neighborhood โ€“ home to populations of Irish, Polish, and other first-generation immigrants that came to work between the 1860s and 1870s.

The area was named after Sheely Brothers Packing Houses, where many of the immigrants came to work. Over the last 60 years, it has experienced dramatic changes.
