It’s important that the pressure of leading a Church doesn’t fall on one person. This could lead to all sorts of issues. We’re all humans with different experiences and opinions and the Lord made us this way. There’s a significant role that elders and deacons fill in the Church. Clement of Rome served as a leader in the church from 95-100AD. He converted more than 400 noteworthy people. Because of this Emperor Trajan imprisoned him. However that didn’t stop Clement. His time in prison was spent leading a ministry amongst his fellow prisoners. Thereafter he was executed by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea. The people built a monument at the outer most part of the tide so that when it was out you could see the monument. Though we don’t have full proof. It is said that in Philippians Paul actually talks about Clement.

Justin Martyr was a greek Philosopher between the years 130-160AD. Before Justin dedicated his life to the Lord he was walking through a field one day and stumbled upon a man. Justin spent hours talking to the man about his work as a philosopher. The Man then tells Him about the Old Testament Prophets. Their stories and dedication to the Lord profoundly impacted Justin. He later dedicated his life to the Lord and passionately became a thinker and writer in the church for the purposes of the Kingdom.

Descriptive and prescriptive are not Biblical terms but a tool we can use to help us discern if a passage is a command or simply a cultural moment in Biblical times. Sometimes these lines are blurred and over time we can lose the relational aspect of our devotions. The Bible first and foremost is a place where we can learn about the heart of God and how he’s calling us to live.
