“What is your problem” - Derek Matthews.

Derek Matthews, owner of the Gathering Powwow, gave a closing speech addressing the buzz from this artwork circulating the internet by Lil Coyote Art

Here’s my problem with Derek, Lita, & Melonie.

Their powwow makes thousands of dollars but they don’t want to pay their Stage 49 performers. They expect our Native talent to perform for free, year after year after year. I hosted Stage 49 three years in a row and I excelled at my hosting duties. I knew going in that I was going to be losing money by “donating” my time & resources but I went anyways because I wanted to perform for the people and it was great.

However, who was the headliner during my last year of hosting, it was Judith Hill from The Voice. Did you they get her to perform for free, no.

Another problem came from the vendors. Did the Matthew’s refund all those vendors who lost their deposit fee during Covid??

And all those Native people sticking up for Derek at Gathering are on his payroll. They’re saying nice things because they want their checks.

Yes, Derek’s powwow is widely supported in Indian Country because it’s the chosen meet up for Native people but it’s not the be all as Derek eluded to in a past interview saying, “Native people would be lost without us” . I don’t think so.

GON is just one dance among hundreds in our communities. And we’re supposedly lost without him, get a grip.

And then he wonders why our Indigenous artist make these caricatures about him.

In the past, tribal members were required to obtain permission to leave the reservation. Native people faced dangerous situations, being chased and shot at from the borders of the reservation. To protect themselves, they would have to arm themselves and prepare for survival. These events occurred around the 1970s. Sadly, non-natives living on the reservation borders saw vulnerable Native Americans as easy targets, making them a sought-after prey. These events are based on true stories, and our series will be focused on the voices of the elders.⚡️🎥🪶✨
