Irie rebuilds his life after foster care
Irie Martin, 21, grew up among several foster families before aging out of Norfolk's traditional foster care system. He says the experience — which included one foster parent who physically abused him and threatened his life — strengthened his preference for solitude. "Everything I've seen and heard and what happened to me kind of, you know, changed me — made me not want to deal with people," he said. "And I guess that got so engrained into my psyche that even now, still a lot of the time, I don't want to be bothered by people."
Martin now works long hours doing laundry at a hotel to support himself.

"Living donor" works with EVMS students
Russ Clark, 73, has elected to be a whole-body donor, dedicating his body to scientific study after death. But Clark didn't want to wait until then to make an impact — he now volunteers as a "living donor" at Eastern Virginia Medical School, sharing his medical history and assisting students in the classroom.
