The rapid spread of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, in African countries constitutes a global health emergency, the World Health Organization declared on Wednesday.

This is the second time in three years that the W.H.O. has designated an mpox epidemic as a global emergency. It previously did so in July 2022. That outbreak went on to affect nearly 100,000 people, primarily gay and bisexual men, in 116 countries, and killed about 200 people.

The threat this time is deadlier. Since the beginning of this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo alone has reported more than 14,000 mpox cases and 524 deaths. Those most at risk include women and children under 15.

“The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern D.R.C., its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general.

The outbreak has spread through 13 countries in Africa, including a few that had never reported mpox cases before. On Tuesday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a “public health emergency of continental security,” the first time the organization has taken that step since the African Union granted it the power to do so last year.

“It’s in the interests of the countries, of the continent and of the world to get our arms around us and stop transmission as soon as we can,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, the executive director for preparedness and response at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, a nonprofit that finances vaccine development.

Facing the threat of global spread, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged clinicians and the public in the United States to be alert for the virus.

The W.H.O.’s designation of a “public health emergency of international concern” is intended to prompt member countries to begin preparing for the virus’s appearance and to share vaccines, treatments and other key resources with poorer nations.

The epidemic is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the virus has now appeared in a dozen other African countries.

Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples!

Indigenous communities make up 5% of the global population and protect 80% of Earth’s remaining biodiversity.

In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every 9th of August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.

Big shout out to the team especially Jingyu pictured here xie xie we couldn’t have done anything without you and everyone that made this unique production possible 🙏🏽🐵📷: Tiana Tan

✨️🌳🌸 Collective Liberation is our goal!

Following in the footsteps of our ancestral revolutionaries, we stare fascism in the face, hold one another up and brace for the times ahead. Liberation is possible with radical action, resistance, education, hope, healing, dreaming, courage, sacrifice - and community.

Our Studio Ghibli inspired community co-created Liberation Affirmations are here to inspire us to stay on the frontlines when we’re tired, scared, and feeling alone. On Nelson Mandela Day (July 18th) we honor Nelson Mandela, a leader known for peace and resistance against South Africa’s apartheid.

Fam - it’s going to be us doing the work. Sharing the ways you’re affirming Liberation in your daily lives can and will empower others to continue their resistance action, too. As we’ve seen in the past, some ways we can topple racist systems and empires is sharing - knowledge, strength, resources and most of all, love.

Living up to their creative potential might be the simplest way for someone to improve their life. “Make creativity a life habit,” Arthur C. Brooks writes. “That means working at your creative practice regularly, not just when you feel like it.”

Modern research in neuroscience and psychology has revealed that actively engaging in creative pursuits is an effective way to gain relief from negative emotions and increase one’s sense of well-being. In 2021, researchers found that for students and working adults, there’s a positive correlation between self-perceived creativity and life satisfaction. Activities such as poetry therapy can also “reduce anxiety and post-traumatic-stress symptoms in patients,” Brooks continues. Even “simply working on creative solutions to common problems can relieve psychological burdens.”

“I have found that many professional artists—an unusually anxious group—seek relief from their affliction by losing themselves,” Brooks writes. Neuroscience offers an explanation for how creativity can lower negative emotions: A 2015 study found that during the idea-generation phase of writing, the part of the brain associated with mind-wandering is especially active. This “suggests that creative activity might have some of the same analgesic effects on stress as contemplative exercises do,” Brooks explains.

With so many creative outlets to choose from, finding one that “fits your personality and tastes can be daunting,” Brooks explains. Luckily, your personality type can offer clues: “Extroverted, novelty-seeking people should try inventive, public avenues such as improv drama and jazz; introverted people who like new experiences might do better in the field of fiction writing,” Brooks writes. “Extroverts who prefer to interpret the works of others can try theater or classical music; introverts in the same vein might prefer studying poetry.”

Regardless of your chosen artistic activity, you will benefit from exercising your creative brain. “Make a habit of your creative pursuit, and feel better as a result—and maybe even inspired,” Brooks continues at the link in our bio.

HAPPY WORLD CHIMPANZEE DAY

In honor of humankind’s closest living relative, is a celebration of an extraordinary species: chimpanzees!

On July 14, 1960, Dr. Jane Goodall arrived in what is now Gombe National Park, Tanzania, to start her trailblazing research on wild chimpanzees. To mark this anniversary, we now celebrate on this day every year.

World Chimpanzee Day was first founded by a group of NGOs, including the Jane Goodall Institute, the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection, and the Lincoln Park Zoo. This year, like every year, is a day of celebration of chimpanzees and the people who have done so much work to help save them. Thank you to all fighting to protect our closest relatives and their remaining wild habitats!

Avoiding Extractive Journalism

At we frequently document the harm extractive industries can inflict on nature & people. However, journalism itself can sometimes be extractive. This issue arises when journalists enter a community, gather stories, and then leave. Despite the journalist’s best intentions, if the story isn’t accessible to the community, they may never benefit from their contributions to the reporting.

In more severe cases, reporting can endanger community members. While a journalist can leave, local community members cannot. This reality underscores the importance of avoiding extractive journalism.

In general, there are several strategies to help reduce extractive journalism, including:
🎯 Long-term engagement: Investing time to understand the complexities of the issues ensures thorough & respectful reporting.
🎯 Involve locals: Partnering with local journalists, fixers, and community members provides invaluable insights & context.
🎯 Follow up: Continued coverage after the initial story helps track developments and measure the impact of the reporting, demonstrating ongoing commitment.
🎯 Seek consent & respect privacy.
🎯 Provide context: Offering historical, social, and cultural background helps avoid sensationalism & stereotyping.
🎯 Be transparent: Openness about intentions, methods, and affiliations can build trust & accountability.
🎯 Share credit: Recognizing the contributions of locals is essential to ethical journalism.
🎯 Educate & empower: Providing communities with training & resources empowers them to share their own narratives.
🎯 Follow standards & create policies.

We have implemented several initiatives to support these ambitions, including:
➡ Our Indigenous News Desk & Fellowship programs are designed to foster collaboration with local journalists & communities.
➡ We have policies that extend safety considerations beyond our staff & contributors to our sources.
➡ We’re investing in formats to reach community members more effectively.
➡ We are exploring partnerships to adapt content into relevant languages.

We aim to ensure that our work not only informs but also benefits the communities involved.

It’s a man’s world when it comes to ape societies — at least, that’s been the prevailing assumption for years. But some recent research is shaking up how we think about this group of primates to which humans belong.

Rebecca Lewis, a professor of anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, and her research team reviewed previous literature on 79 primate species, including nine ape species, and grouped them into one of three categories: male-dominant, female-dominant, and co-dominant.

The conclusion?

“Non-male biased power is not uncommon,” Lewis says.

Of the species surveyed, 58% were found to have male-biased power structures, but female- or co-dominant structures were found within every major primate group, including gibbons (lesser apes) and great apes.
