On the latest episode of At a Distance—and after four incredible years and 165 other conversations, our grand finale!—Rebecca Solnit, the author of books including “A Paradise Built in Hell” (2009) and “Orwell’s Roses” (2021) and the co-editor of the new collection of essays “Not Too Late: Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility,” discusses the long view as a “mind-blowing” way of looking at the world, why the majority of people tend to be altruistic and resourceful in a disaster, and why the climate crisis requires eschewing a scarcity mindset for one of abundance.

All too often, gifts that bring initial delight end their lives in dusty corners, attic nooks, or worse still, the dump. Nifty gadgets’ batteries go unreplaced, coffee-table books get swapped out, kitchen utensils lose their luster. This gifting season, we searched far and wide for gifts that would stand the test of time—ones that are durable, made to last, and, most importantly, will actually be used for years or even decades to come.

lives by the Italian adage “festina lente,” or, “make haste slowly.” As a restaurateur and the co-owner (with her husband, the chef ) of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy; its sister restaurant, the more casual bistro ; and Ferrari’s , as well as the co-founder of the nonprofit and the social start-up , it’s a fitting modus operandi.

This “festina lente” outlook is also encapsulated by the title of her and Bottura’s latest book, “Slow Food, Fast Cars” (), a recipe-slash-interiors book that aims to capture the sensory and culinary experience of staying at their guest house, . The volume collates 85 recipes for breakfasts, brunches, and snacks, including frittatas, focaccias, pastries, and preserves, with personal essays and photographic spreads of the house’s interior design, cars, and countryside landscape.

In this week’s Media Diet, we speak with Gilmore about the media she turns to to stay informed, find escape, and embrace her inner child, from Modena’s local newspapers and the podcast .emergency to Peter and the Wolf.

Our December 2023 Book of the Month pick is “To Free the Captives: A Plea for the American Soul” () by the Pulitzer Prize–winning poet . This searing memoir travels through time, relationships, and Smith’s own life to illuminate the lasting legacy of racism in our country. Our November 2023 Book of the Month is “Open Questions: Thirty Years of Writing About Art” () by the Los Angeles–based writer and curator , host of the Dialogues podcast from .

In this collection of 24 essays, Molesworth explores the works of artists including Ruth Asawa, D**e Blair, Noah Davis, Marcel Duchamp, , and . “Molesworth doesn’t aim to lecture her reader, but instead engages them and points to the things that ‘pleased, confused, bothered, disturbed, or confounded’ her,” writes the Brooklyn-based writer in her review. “Open Questions is more than a collection of art writing; it is a meditation on seeing and feeling, on connecting and thought-making. Molesworth gives that power to the viewer, and in a way, gives them the chance to be the curator themselves.”

The Austrian-born, New York–based graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister has a rare knack for tackling broad, universal subjects—happiness and beauty, most notably—and distilling them in illuminating ways that offer new insights. For his latest project, the book “Now Is Better,” just out from Phaidon, he’s taken on the subject of long-term thinking, arguing that never before in human history have things been better for us as a species.

In our latest Big Interview, Sagmeister speaks about why all this data is giving him optimism and hope for our present and future; why humans have a propensity for short-term thinking and consuming negative news, and how to help change that; and his take on the ongoing, time-honored “What makes something art versus design?” debate.

Until February 4, 2024, the Brooklyn Museum will have an (unofficial) new name: the Crooklyn Museum. As of last weekend, the fifth floor is hosting “Spike Lee: Creative Sources,” an immersive exhibition featuring more than 450 objects—ranging from artwork, sports jerseys, and film posters to photographs and musical instruments—from the award-winning filmmaker’s personal collection. “The exhibition demonstrates how you get from A to Z,” curator says, “not in the sense of ‘this is the process of making a film,’ but ‘this is the process of how Lee gets inspired and fueled.’” Through seven thematic sections—“Black History and Culture,” “Family,” “Brooklyn,” “Photography,” “Cinema History,” “Music,” and “Sports”—museum visitors are taken on a dynamic journey through Lee’s creative process.

Our October 2023 Book of the Month is “Roman Stories” (), the Pulitzer Prize–winning author ’s latest collection of short stories, beautifully translated from Italian to English by Lahiri and Todd Portnowitz.

In these nine probing tales, Lahiri enters a broad diasporic world existing entirely within Rome, the city in which she has lived, on and off, for the past 11 years. It is a magnificent book, reflective of—and extending out of—the time she has spent in the Eternal City, but with giant fictional leaps. Through characters who experience at turns, among other things, xenophobia and nationalism, violence, racism, anxiety, and various social and cultural divisions, Lahiri explores what it means to adapt to Rome, to adopt it as a home, to decipher its particularities and peculiarities as an outsider—and also, in some cases, to experience it as an insider.

In the whirring, flashing, globe-spanning machine that is American popular culture, Memphis, Tennessee—population 620,000—operates as one of those miraculous little cogs that performs a hundred vital functions without ever wearing out. Unfortunately, that’s not quite how Memphians tend to see their city these days, with its poverty and unemployment rates at nearly twice the national average.

The city’s new Tom Lee Park, however—open as of last weekend—has challenged this enduring pessimism. Designed by the celebrated Chicago-based firm , in tandem with landscape specialists and a host of accomplished collaborators, the 30-acre waterfront greenspace could be just what the city needs to remind of its vaunted place in the cultural canon and help push it forward.

If there’s anything that cares even more deeply about than clothes, it has to be color. Since establishing his namesake fashion label in 2016, the Baton Rouge–born, Brooklyn-based fashion designer has quickly gained as much notoriety for his bold, kaleidoscopic color palette and poppy patterns as he has for his billowing, exquisitely silhouetted dresses. Eschewing—or at least pushing—any boundaries between “high” and “low,” “hard” and “soft,” or “masculine” and “feminine,” Rogers brings a fluid, unpretentious perspective to fashion, one that has swiftly landed him on an episode of “Gossip Girl,” red carpets, and into the illustrious halls of the in New York.

In our latest Big Interview, Rogers speaks to his various approaches to color, at once logical, esoteric, and instinctual; his new Carte Blanche paint-color and wallpaper-print collaboration with ; and the powerful links he sees between comic books and fashion design.
