Looking forward to all my Kings and Queens tuning into Footsteps of Reggae (89.9 FM Columbia University Radio) broadcasting for 48 hours straight with lot's of special guests selectors and artists passing through!

WKCR announces a much-awaited celebration of reggae music: a 48-hour broadcast on FM and HD radio and online, from 12:00am on Saturday, January 3rd, to 12:00am on Monday, January 5th, of 2024. In honor of Dennis Brown and Bob Marley, the broadcast will occur between their birthdays on February 1st and 6th, respectively. It will run from the conclusion of the Phil Schaap Memorial Broadcast on Friday until The Celtic Show at 12:00am on Monday. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Saturday and Sunday programming, other than Footsteps of Reggae and Across 110th Street, both of which will consist of reggae programming.

WKCR listeners and programmers alike await Footsteps of Reggae on Saturdays, and we at the station are looking forward to this festival with similar excitement. Featuring guest musicians and programming from many students as well as Vaughn Allstar and Carter Van Pelt, the prolific and loved hosts of Footsteps of Reggae, the 48 hours will be packed with all styles of reggae music. This event is also a callback to the WKCR reggae festival of 1995 and an opportunity to celebrate reggae on WKCR’s airwaves and everywhere else.

The broadcast will feature live programming, archival WKCR performances, on-air in-studio performances and DJ sets, all centering around the rich past and present of reggae music since its birth in Jamaica in the late 1960s.

With the heaviest of hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved Aston "Familyman" Barrett after a long medical battle. This morning, the world lost not just an iconic musician and the backbone of The Wailers but a remarkable human being whose legacy is as immense as his talent. Our family is asking for privacy during this challenging time, as words cannot express our profound loss.

Aston Barrett was the original bassist for Bob Marley and The Wailers, a pioneer, a mentor, and most importantly, a true family man. His contributions to music were recognized with multiple honors:

- In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player Magazine.
- In 2020, he was selected as the number-one bassist by the staff of Bass Player Magazine, in their ranking of "20 legendary players who shaped the sound of electric bass."
- In 2021, he was honored with the Order of Distinction (Commander class) in the National Honours and Awards on Jamaica’s 59th Anniversary of Independence.

Aston's music brought joy to millions, and his influence on reggae is beyond measure. He was a man of few words, but his words carried wisdom, kindness, and love. His bass lines were not just the foundation of The Wailers' music but the heartbeat of a genre that has touched hearts around the globe.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of the journey with us. Your love, support, and kind words have been a source of strength during this difficult time. Let us remember Familyman for the legend he was and the incredible memories he has given us. In his own words, "The older the moon, the brighter it shines," a reminder of the enduring light he shared with us all, shining brighter with each passing day.

Rest in peace, Familyman. Your legacy will live on forever in our hearts and through the music you've left us. We love you and will miss you deeply.
