A few things - he didn’t mean “big” as in she’s growing. He saw her plate, his eyes got big and he felt entitled to make this disparaging comment.
I had quite a bit I wanted to say but couldn’t bc my 7 year old was sitting there and I didn’t want her to see her mom visibly upset.
Secondly, my good friend @joellegarguilo reminded me that we never know what someone else is going through, and she’s right, so while I wanted to give him a huge piece of my mind, I kept it cordial.
Lastly, my daughter is okay. We had a long talk after. I have no idea if this will stay with her in the long run but I have faith that if it does, she will feel comfortable talking to me.
Oh and one more thing, I’m proud of myself for not completely losing it on him. Therapy works 😂

❤️ First of all, I am grateful to you all for keeping my family in your thoughts and checking in on me. I am so fortunate to have so many people who care about my dad and me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. 🫶
I gave myself a day to process before I told M.
She has been helping me pack lunch for him to bring to the hospital.
One of the questions I asked my dad was “what’s something I did as a kid that you felt very proud of?” Before he answered, he asked me if there was something like that for me and my kids and I told him about what happened with M - how first she tried to comfort me but then she was also able to let go and cry. He was astounded. and then told me “no, i have no stories about you that are like that” 😅😂
TBH when it happened, I was astounded too. But the way I have worked to parent my kids is a direct result of how my dad parented me.
I intend to share more about my dad with you all, he is the most amazing person I have ever known.
Please send prayers for peaceful and painless passing for him. He has been in so much pain it’s truly heartbreaking.

Nowadays, she sets her boundaries a bit differently 😂😅
But when I posted this story a year ago, a bunch of people pointed out that we shouldn’t let her speak to us this way…
➡️Here’s why we’ve never shut her down when she sets a boundary:
- her feeling comfortable telling us what she needs is most important, if we started nitpicking about her words, we’d lose that important element
- we were sitting in HER room on HER bed
- she’s allowed to be annoyed. Adults get annoyed, too. We shouldn’t make our children feel like they can’t.
- we knew that she would eventually find better ways to communicate her boundaries (which she has!) and I feel a lot of pride in knowing that she’s comfortable enough with both of us to do that.
I also wanna give this huge parenting win trophy 🏆 to Eric. He’s a great father and I don’t know that many dads who would have reacted this way.

I read this study a while back that said when kids overhear positive talk about themselves, it has more of an effect than if you say it to them directly. So when i can, i say positive things to my husband or to a stuffed animal around them so they can develop positive self talk.
