Women's health issues often center around pregnancy and fertility, but an interview snippet in Forbes suggests the topic of menopause deserves more attention. Forbes Books author Alyssa Rapp talked to Booth business school student Uma Veerappan about the thesis she's worked on with another Booth alum on the Menopause Care Market. Veerappan says women's health is getting more investor attention, but menopausal women want better care and don't have many options. She suggests it's an exciting time for entrepreneurs to jump on this market opportunity.

Today, the Central Bank of Iran will conduct a pilot launch of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). For several years, the so-called "crypto-rial" has been in the works, with the goal of "helping improve financial inclusion and functioning as a powerful tool for the CBI to compete with other stable coins globally." The crypto rial has also been viewed as a means of combating Iran's widespread corruption. The CBDC will run on the Borna platform, which was built with Hyperledger Fabric, an open-source distributed ledger technology platform developed by IBM. Because the platform is authorized, the Central Bank will choose which banks will participate.

A landslide in Ecuador’s capital is responsible for deaths, injuries, and damaged homes. The Guardian says a hillside in Quito collapsed on Tuesday following nearly 24 hours of rain.
At last word, city officials had reported at least 24 deaths.
The Quito Security Department said more than 30 people were hurt and at least eight houses had collapsed.
The Guardian says neighbors in the area were helping rescue workers search for survivors.
One woman said her house started to move as though an earthquake had struck, and she tells the Guardian that water and rocks began pouring through her doors and windows.
Gun sales in the United States dropped dramatically in January following a pandemic-driven surge. According to Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, sales of firearms fell 42.6% last month but were still in line with pre-pandemic levels.
SAAF says it can’t pinpoint why sales dropped so suddenly, but the industry has been expecting a slowdown. SAAF estimates put firearms sales at 19.9 million in 2021. It’s the second-busiest year for gun sales since the FBI began publishing background check data in the late 1990s. A record 22.8 million guns were sold back in 2020. Of those buying, about 5.4 million people bought their first gun last month.

The New York Times analysis of mortality figures shows that since the omicron variant in the U.S. on December 1st, the number of Americans who’ve died from COVID-19 is at least 63% higher than what’s being seen in other large, wealthy nations.
The U.S. also recently surpassed Britain and Belgium in having the largest share of its population to have died from the virus throughout the entire pandemic. Some speculate that it may be due to vaccination rates and boosters, despite having large supplies, the U.S. is lagging behind other nations.
