Pat Murphy: The Oldest Man In The Sea
In 2012 we lugged all of our film gear over to Ireland in search of an inspiring story to make a short documentary about. The crazy thing is, we went there without knowing at all what the story was going to be or even who we were going to film. We landed and immediately started scouring the country for an interesting story and an interesting character.
After about a week, we found ourselves down in a small coastal town called Castletown Bearhaven. It was beautiful, remote, and not a tourist in sight. At this point, we had already been searching for a week for our character, but hadn't found the perfect person. While sitting in various restaurants and pubs in the area, three seperate people told us legendary stories about a man named Pat Murphy. He sounded as if he was the most interesting character in Ireland. Everyone had great stories about Pat, but no one knew where he was. So we went on a search to find him.
Someone told us the general area where they thought he lived. We literally went door to door knocking and asking whoever answered if they were Pat Murphy. "No, sorry". "Nope". "Not here". We really weren't sure if we were ever going to find him.
Suddenly, a door opened and the kindest Irish lady opened the door. We asked if Pat Murphy lived there and she happily explaimed "Yes, I'm his wife! But he's out at sea for another 3 days." We let her know that we are filmmakers from NYC and are there to film a documentary about him, because we hear he's extremely interesting. She happily agreed and asked us to come back in 3 days when he gets back from his sea excursion.
When we made it back in a few days, we were so excited to meet Pat and he was everything and more than we could have ever imagined. We basically just turned on the cameras and let him talk his mind. We spent time out on the sea with him and he kindly let us into his home and into his life.
This was such an exciting experience for us. We loved letting him tell his story and creating this vi
Storyboard vs. final product
A well planned out shoot is a happy shoot. Here’s a side by side comparison of our storyboards next to the final produce for our The Trade Desk shoot last year. Although, not every project requires exact storyboards like this.
