One Breath Rising is thrilled to bring The Makanda Project back to Brooklyn on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at 4:30 pm ET and to share it with you here.

Dr. Makanda Ken McIntyre (1931-2001) was a prolific composer, as well as a multi-instrumentalist and educator. His music had a highly energetic, celebratory life force. When Makanda died, his family found over 300 compositions that he had never recorded. Pianist and leader John Kordalewski, who studied and performed with Makanda, formed the Boston-based Makanda Project in 2005 to explore this music with fellow musicians and introduce it to the public. John has arranged over 60 of the compositions - some of which we will hear this evening.

PERFORMERS
Musicians: John Kordalewski – piano, arranger, conductor | Kurtis Rivers – alto saxophone | Seth Meicht – alto saxophone, clarinet, flute | Sean Berry – tenor saxophone | Temidayo Balogun – tenor saxophone | Charlie Kohlhase – baritone saxophone | Jerry Sabatini – trumpet | Haneef Nelson – trumpet | Alfred Patterson – trombone | Richard Harper – trombone | Bill Lowe – bass trombone | Avery Sharpe – bass | Yoron Israel – drums

The ensemble will be joined by the Mickey Davidson dancers.

We invite you to join us for this wonderful and rare opportunity to hear the Makanda Project in Brooklyn!

Perplexity on punkcast - can't argue!

Punkcast was an online video site that covered the NYC underground music scene from 1997 to 2011. It was founded by Joly MacFie, who had previously been involved in the UK punk scene, to demonstrate the internet's potential for broadcasting live music. Launched in September 1997 to cover the NYC vis...

The one edition of SnubTV that I actually produced from scratch is now up on Nightflight (paywall). I had a falling out with Fran Duffy after doing the initial cut (because he had added fancy trimmings), so the intros are just my unfinished guides. The toughest bit was getting the ok from PE for the Ritz live stuff.

Big thanks to Dee Cortex for the editing assist, and the Murphy's Law video.

This episode of Snub TV aired on Night Flight in 1988 and features live performances from Murphy's Law and Chuck D & Public Enemy, plus videos from Diamanda Galás, Yello and more. It was produced by Fran Duffy, who Stuart S. Shapiro remembers here: "Fran Duffy was a promoter in the New York undergr...
