Last night’s sold out World Premiere of composer Damien Geter’s American Apollo, with libretto by Lila Palmer, was an absolute triumph! Des Moines Metro Opera’s vibrant production, directed by Shaun Patrick Tubbs, featured stunning visuals and an incredibly talented cast of singing actors in a powerful story based on the real life relationship between artist John Singer Sargent and Thomas Eugene McKeller, the artist’s previously unknown model and muse. Through this impactful new work, Thomas is at last truly seen, and heard. Bravi tutti!!

Tonight I had the pleasure of being among the first to experience selections from the North American Indigenous Songbook. This initiative, led by Timothy Long, creates a space for the voices of a new generation of Indigenous artists to be heard, creating music that is truly inspiring, and reminds us all of the power of art to bring us together and connect us. Much gratitude to those who shared their talents and spirits tonight, and to Ana De Archuleta and National Sawdust for partnering with The Plimpton Foundation to bring this stunningly beautiful work to us all.

UIA is absolutely thrilled for our Vice President, Shawn Jeffery, who will be the first artist representative ever to join the faculty of Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Shawn brings her vast wealth of knowledge and experience in opera as a manager, producer, and performer to this great institution and its incredibly talented students, and they are so lucky to have her!

She remains as committed as ever in her work at UIA and with our amazing roster, representing singers and creatives, and continuing her collaborations with producers and presenters around the world.

New hires include Metropolitan Opera soloist Sarah Piques Eddy, As One composer Laura Kaminsky, and UIA Artist Management Vice President Shawn Marie Jeffery.

What a joy to be in Chicago last night for the final presentation of The Weight of Light, librettist Marcus Amaker’s first full opera with music composed by Gillian Rae Perry. Part of Chicago Opera Theater’s Vanguard Initiative, this work is one of incredible heart and truly has the voice of this generation. Marcus set me on this journey to work with creators - and I am so humbled and grateful to be a part of this process that makes such an impact on the people who see these new works being produced. Truly. Go see some art.

The Program's mission is to empower young professionals from historically underrepresented groups to make progress towards becoming leaders in our industry.
