HIV stigma. Stigma is still the reason that guy I asked to go home with me didn't. Stigma is still the reason I didn't keep the job. Stigma is the reason some people don't take their HIV medication or PrEP because they're too embarrassed to go to a pharmacy or a doctor and discuss it. Stigma is the irrational fear that people have while talking about s*x, or safe s*x, or reproductive desires, and rights, abortion. Stigma is a single mother, stigma is a person coming out of the closet, stigma is gay, stigma is le***an, stigma is bis*xual, stigma is transgendered, stigma is color, stigma is race, stigma is taboo, stigma is embarrassing. Stigma is coming out of the closet to your parents and wondering if they will reject you or continue to pay for your college tuition. Stigma is still the reason I didn't have good relationships with my sister and her husband because he was afraid that his kids would get HIV from playing with me and she didn't have the brains to correct him. Stigma is still the reason for the work that I do and my reason to get out of bed in the morning to make the world better. Stigma is still the reason we get kicked out of our families. Stigma is still the reason for the emotional and fiscal poverty that we experience, because we are trying to do the right thing by being honest about ourselves and our statuses and the rights of others to live and be the s*xual beings that they are. Stigma is still the reason that life is not as easy as it should be. Stigma is the barrier between us as conversationalists and human beings. Stigma is the fear of the unknown, stigma creates silence through the pain and pain through the silence. Stigma causes su***de, stigma hurts, and stigma kills. On this world AIDS day, do what you can to reduce or eliminate stigma, because one day it could happen to you. To everyone who is maintaining their own personal positivity in spite of an HIV diagnosis. Be the one who kills stigma instead of letting stigma kill you! ❤
