Welcome to Team Tuesdays, where we’ll be sharing working views and glimpses into the lives of ! 💚

First up, Literary Intern Danielle Hunter is sharing her beautiful view from the Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington Seattle Campus.

Spending high school summer hours lost in video games, Danielle’s love for all things high fantasy began. Based in Seattle, Danielle is a senior at the University of Washington, working towards a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing. She was born in Mannheim, Germany, but has lived in or visited countries like Japan, the Dominican Republic, and South Korea. Throughout her college career, she’s worked as a Marketing/Publicity intern for Overcup Press based in Oregon, worked as an editorial intern for a historical literary project, and has lingered for too long in the University of Washington’s Harry Potter reading room. She’s been reading since early elementary school and has a few personal projects of her own. When not reading or writing, she’s probably on the track. She’s a NCAA D1 athlete, a sprinter at her university. (Or she’s rewatching Arcane: League of Legends for the billionth time). She’s active in her Christian faith and is often playing gospel music.

Come back next Tuesday for another !

NEW CLIENT ALERT 🚨

Garrett Mostowski’s work has recently appeared in or is forthcoming from BULL, Barren, The Porch, Olney Mag, Unstamatic, Spurned, The Galway Review, and others. He is a member of the Order of the Rocking Chair, a group of artists and activists committed to transformative storytelling. His bold and visceral reimagining of Jonah and The Whale snagged Maggie’s attention, and she devoured every page of the manuscript.

Welcome to , Garrett!

We're looking for "cinematic books", but what exactly does that mean? How can you make your book more cinematic? Create characters who feel like best friends, antagonists we love to hate, and memories that stay with us long after we have read them as if they were our own. Define the goals, stakes, and tension of your characters to help boost the cinematic potential of your manuscript and leave us wanting more. If you have a cinematic book, we want to see it!

This week’s query tip piggybacks off of the last one of 2023; they’re both all about maximizing your sample pages. Everyone has had that moment: you go to attach the first five pages of your manuscript to your query, only to discover that page five ends midsentence or in the middle of a thought. What to do then? Don’t leave us hanging: include the rest of that sentence or paragraph! Each agent tailors the number of sample pages they request to provide them with enough material to efficiently evaluate your work, but we’re not rigid about that page break. While sneaking in a bunch of additional material won’t fool an agent into reading more (or give them warm fuzzies for your project), we absolutely want you to finish your thought by wrapping up that final sentence that began on page five. Alternatively, if it makes more sense to cut the sample a bit short, leaving us hungry to know what happens next, please do! But above all, please don’t be afraid of that ledge, and put your best foot forward.

We’ve all heard one of the most ubiquitous pieces of writing advice out there: avoid passive voice. While not every sentence needs to be in active voice, we agree that the liveliest stories, the ones that put the reader right in the middle of the action, utilize active verbs and strong nouns to their fullest extent. When a story employs too much passive voice, the reader can begin to feel like they’re being told the story from a distance. As a result, the story may fail to capture the reader’s attention and they’ll put it down. Accordingly, searching your manuscript for passive voice can be an effective way to identify sections with too much “telling” or exposition. Liven those sections up, and ensure that you hook your reader.

You've polished and honed your first five pages for submission, so don't sell them short! Before attaching the requested number of sample pages to your query, first remove any front matter, like tables of contents or long epigraphs, to make sure we get to see as much of your story as possible. We want to read your narrative, so use the entire space allotted on content – not extras.

How many times have you heard an agent or editor say that they were initially drawn to a manuscript by the main character’s unique voice? Voice can be such a tricky craft issue to tackle because it often feels ineffable, like it’s impossible to pin down the precise techniques and tools that a writer can use to establish that voice.

Those techniques and tools are many – word choice, sentence structure, and more – but underlying all of that is the basic truth that you must first make space in your story for your character to use their voice. One of the best ways to do that is to put your character’s thoughts directly on the page – in their voice – as they think them. When you shortcut their thought process by summarizing their conclusions, you’re depriving your character of a critical opportunity to speak directly to your readers. Who better to draw readers in to your story than the quirky, vibrant character who’s living it?

“Show don’t tell” is one of the oldest craft rules out there. While it sounds simple in theory, however, in practice this advice can be tricky to implement. Especially when it comes to spotting told prose in your own work! We’ll be exploring the nuances of topic over the next several weeks, and hope it’ll help you make your work even stronger.

Of course there is a place in every story for some “told” prose, because sometimes incidents need to be summarized for story flow and pacing, but if you’ve ever had someone tell you your story contains too much “telling,” this series is for you.

For this first week we’re starting out with “show don’t tell” at its most basic: to make your story come to life, show us your characters’ actions in scene, not summary. Your goal as an author should be to immerse the reader in each scene and make them feel as if they’re experiencing it together with your characters.

For a deeper dive into show don't tell, check out Understanding Show, Don't Tell (And Really Getting It) by Janice Hardy. And stay tuned for more tips in the coming weeks!

Most authors start their search for comp titles with books from the same genre or with similar themes. But don’t forget that books with a similar tone or mood can be great comps too – even if they don’t match the subject matter of your book! And don’t limit your search to your genre; a book from a different genre, or even a movie or tv show, can be a great choice too. Or best of all: choose a couple of comp titles that are similar to your book in different ways, and explain to the agent how they fit. For instance: “this manuscript combines the time travel and historical exploration of BACK TO THE FUTURE with the cozy autumn vibes of A VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES.” Yes, please!

In choosing your next read, what two titles would you most like to see combined? Let us know in the comments!

What does your first line need to accomplish?

Mostly, it just needs to make us want to read the second one. Easier said then done, we know.

(Writing is hard! Ugh!)

But what else should you think about including in your first line?

If you're writing fantasy or sci-fi, consider how you can elicit setting and world without over-describing it.

If you're writing a suspense, thriller, or horror, how can you create the mood in that first line?

If you're writing upmarket or literary, how can you show deep character connections or symbolism in that first sentence?

But remember, first and foremost, that first line needs to make us want to read the second line.

What else can you add to your first sentence to deepen the reader's experience?
