"With copyediting in particular, my dream vision, in addition to the things that I mentioned in the article, is something like a conversation that happens between an author and the copyeditor before the copyediting happens, where the author names some of their values as a writer. And a lot of the work that I try to do now is values driven, and I found in working with writers that sometimes it’s actually really hard to even identify your own values as a writer, because we’re not accustomed to doing that. So being able to identify them, to say what you want in a copyeditor, and also — in a totally ideal dream world — being able to understand the larger systems and structures that inform your values, because I think some people come in there saying, 'Well, I just want to be respected,' but not really thinking about where respect comes from and what they mean by that. So: informed statement of values, a copyeditor who puts those values first — before, maybe, the publisher’s values, before social values — and then does the work."

It's been over a year since Helen Betya Rubinstein released her pot-stirring LitHub article "Against Copyediting." Check out her thoughts on the reaction of readers in this interview with Outside the Book! Literary Hub

I talked with Helen Betya Rubinstein about the aftershocks of writing “Against Copyediting,” which appeared on Literary Hub.

“I hope that through this book, educators see themselves,” Austin said. “Teaching is a really tough profession, engaging with so many lives day after day, worrying about your students who may be going through rough times, wanting to reach each student to engage them so they become lifelong learners. . .Teaching is all consuming, if you let it be, and it’s hard not to let it if you love what you do. You have to love your students and be passionate about what you do.”

Check out the latest piece on Dr. Pat Austin and her collection TALES FROM A TEACHING LIFE!

The path to becoming a lifelong educator wasn’t always apparent for Pat Austin, PhD. While studying for a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Agnes Scott College In Georgia, something changed.

"In Mark Twain’s satire, a raving King Leopold of Belgium launches an impassioned defense of his gruesome policies in Africa, claiming his divine right to brutalize the Congolese people. A scathing condemnation of imperialism and the violence that it incites, Twain’s words retain all of their vitriol over a century later. For years this remarkable work, which lead the first international campaign for human rights, has only been reproduced in low-quality facsimile.

Using the original 1905 release, The University of New Orleans Press has restored the manuscript with new typesetting and archival photographs. In a new introduction, Dr. Hunt Hawkins provides crucial insight into Twain’s mindset as he pushes for social reform. Although Twain likely never knew the impact of his campaign, King Leopold’s Soliloquy remains a hallmark of anti-imperialist rhetoric and a testament to the power of Twain’s words."

"In the time of reconstruction following the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, a number of Brazilian immigrants relocated to New Orleans, establishing their own immigrant network in the city. POST-KATRINA BRAZUCAS examines how this network developed from 2005 to the present and how Brazilians 'performed' their presence in their new home. While rebuilding a devastated city, Brazilians created a new enclave in New Orleans and created hybrid forms of Brazilian-New Orleanian cultural expression."

“Schools right now seem to pretend that gender exists only for those at the margins—the trans kids, the nonbinary students. But everyone—teachers, administrators, parents and students—has a gender identity, an understanding of self that is formed by the historical, cultural and personal journey through gender that they have taken in their life. To not have the vocabulary and conceptual framework to perceive gender and grasp its role in your life is a huge deficit. . . Gender is right there. And when it is taught well—openly and expansively—the classroom is full of wonder, laughter and curiosity. Just what education should be.”

Alex Myers' words are always such a pleasure to read, and we're incredibly excited to be releasing the second edition of SUPPORTING TRANSGENDER STUDENTS—out in the world this June!

A Vermont program director writes that students must be equipped with tools to talk about their sense of self and their feelings on roles, rules and hierarchies.

"What Kuzmich’s characters yearn for is more complex and far-reaching than what the American Dream, with its false and simplifying promises, can satisfy. Perhaps what makes Kuzmich’s stories so startling and original is the author’s refusal to meet our expectations, as her Armenian-American characters long for more than what our preconceived notions of closure or happiness can give them."

"Braver's novel is rich and humane, a tightly controlled, beautifully orchestrated portrait of contemporary terrors and the feedback loops of fear and paranoia they create that mesmerize us and, tragically, sometimes drive us mad. There are those that disappear in the violence, and those that disappear searching for them in their wakes, trying to make sense of insanity." — Paul Harding, winner of the Pulitzer Prize
