Salty and sweet lovers ALERT!! I have a food find for you!

Imagine a melt-in-your-mouth, freshly made glazed donut, split in half crosswise to be used as a “bun” for a breakfast sandwich of fried egg, sausage and cheese. Not toast, not a biscuit, a DONUT breakfast sandwich, or you can opt for a waffle.

Mariah’s Bakery and Edible Art Gallery on Lapalco, just the other side of the Lapalco bridge, is the place for divine donuts, cakes, and other creative bites from Keontrell Jones and her husband. Their story of loss - their daughter Mariah - and recovery through a foundation providing specialty cakes for underserved chronically ill and mentally challenged children, is especially sweet, and how the bakery was born.

That breakfast sandwich, the bundt cakes, the donuts - even a create-your-own option… These people and this place are THE TRUTH. Run, don’t walk. See ya there.

This week I’m giving a shout out to two old-school favorites, places that have done a cool pandemic shift… I’m talking Parkway Bakery and Veniezia’s

Parkway Bakery has expanded their seating and rolled out a few new sandwiches. Right now I’ve got big love for the Deep Fried Creole BBQ Shrimp - a huge po boy filled with flash fried Louisiana shrimp covered in a seasoned, buttery New Orleans style bbq shrimp sauce. Complete the move with a Frozen Porch Swing cocktail - trust me on this one, it’s amazing.

As for Venezia, they enlarged the dining room some time back, and the food and cocktails just keep getting better and better. For me, it all starts with an ice cold gin martini, followed by a cold antipasto salad and my new favorite, the lemon, butter and garlic bomb roasted chicken that comes to the table on a sizzling plate. Side of pasta? Definitely.

Doubling up on the Lipitor, I’m Lorin Gaudin for Cumulus New Orleans. Let’s eat!
