😲Nobody wants to buy your course.😲

That doesn't mean that people aren't BUYING courses, but y'all. They're buying the transformation. NOT the package.
They're buying the results and the BENEFIT that going through your offer gives them.
People *ARE* shopping, we're just getting more discerning. That's GOOD news for business owners--make a few tweaks and you'll REALLY stand out.
Here’s four ways to position your offers so they SELL:

1) Talk About Transformation that your offer gives. What are the results? You're right. People don't buy courses, but they *DO* buy transformation. They do buy results. So talk about that.

2) What Makes You Different? How do YOU do what you do? How do YOU give your dream humans that transformation? A LOT of people are selling SOMETHING, showcase how you’re set apart. 💎

3) Explain What They Get. After you show the transformation, the next logical question is going to be, HOW do you deliver that promise. This is where you can talk about whether it's video, audio, courses or face-to-face.

4) What Else? This is the hard part–is hard for business owners take off those rose colored glasses and answer this:

If someone bought your offer, why might they *NOT* have success? Answer THAT (seriously, answer that) and then create something that FIXES it.

Here’s a fantastic example! I got a leaflet in the mail selling little bugs that eat fly larvae (I kid you not–I live on a farm, this is COOL). In the pamphlet it’s got some FAQs and one is an exclusive WEATHER WATCHER service which sends email alerts if the weather is different from “normal”. SUCH a good example of what COULD happen if someone bought the product and STILL fail (it’s too hot, too dry, too rainy. Whatever).
They saw a way their consumers could FAIL and they created A BONUS to counteract that.

You’re thinking…

❌ *Maybe* you should have just written it yourself. And justify spending your hard earned $$$ with, “at least I saved myself the time of having to write it myself”.

❌ *Maybe* it was your fault.

❌ *Maybe* copywriters are all sizzle & no steak.

❌ Lower your standards, and not expecting too much the next time you hire out your launch copy?

DON'T give up; it’s NOT your fault. Some copywriters ARE worth the salt.

🔥 Here’s a few things you need to ask a potential copywriter to make sure you'll get the sizzle AND the steak🔥

➡️ Their MARKETING background (funnel & offer strategy) If they DON'T have a background in marketing you’ll need to micromanage in an area that might not be either one of your strong points. Copy & strategy go together like cheese & bacon.

➡️ CERTIFICATION: are they experienced, certified, or trained? Sales copywriting ISN'T like writing a book, a blog or a website.
It’s a highly focused skill & someone who is certified & experienced isn’t going to turn around and become a coach, and it’s not a VA who’s doing some copy on the side.
A certified conversion copywriter & strategist is continually honing their skills and surrounds themselves with mentors & community to brainstorm ideas with. They aren’t fizzling out overnight.

➡️ THEIR PROCESS: have them walk you through EACH STEP of their info gathering & writing process.

➡️ UNDERSTANDING YOUR DREAM HUMANS: don’t underestimate this, and don’t let a copywriter shirk this - if you’ve got a high ticket offer and your copywriter isn’t talking directly to your past & present clients, FIND SOMEONE NEW.

➡️ DATA ANALYTICS: your copywriter should sit with you BEFORE you launch, explain benchmarks & look at your own data together so that you can hold him/her accountable for what they write. Launch success goes beyond the copy - offer & traffic is important too but your copywriter also needs to hold their own.

If your copywriter CAN’T OR WON’T give you answers to these questions it’s time to find someone else.

Let me share an IRL story on the power of networking that happened because of my brand new Facebook group today.
This morning a Facebook friend reached out to ask about my copywriting services. After chatting a while, we both knew we weren’t a good fit.
That could have been the end of the story. . . But God.
She asked if I could recommend someone instead. And I could.
Because last night I connected with Heather Crouch "another" copywriter. We found a common ground and chatted for a while in Messenger last night, and she joined the group. I happened to take a look at her website.
We are both “Copywriters”. But we aren’t the same. And that made her a PERFECT fit for the client when I wasn’t.
There are 3 BIG LESSONS:
1. If you’re feeling imposter syndrome or comparisonitis because someone else in a group (this one or otherwise) “does the same thing”. . . DON’T. Find out what makes you unique. There is space for all of us.
2. Networking with other service providers WORKS. Take time to do an intro post. Connect with others.
3. Be willing to SERVE. Sometimes you’ll get the client. Sometimes you won’t. But having a directory of people you can refer someone too will NEVER feel bad. It will come back around to you.

“Claire, how can you write about my industry if you’ve *NEVER* worked in it?”
Great question (and one of the top three questions I’m asked by prospective clients)! You’ve spent YEARS or DECADES in your field, learning the nuances, the lingo, all the external (and internal) factors that affect your market.
You know your competition. You’ve seen the UPs…and the downs.
You might be certified, professionally recognized & award winning.
But me? I’ve NEVER spent a day in my life as a coach, a photographer, a mechanic, a __________ (fill in the blank).
So how can I write your EMAILS & SALES COPY if I know literally NOTHING about what you do?
As a PR exec for 10+ years, we needed to learn A LOT about an industry; and fast (especially before submitting a $$$ pitch). We weren’t into typical “publicity” (think restaurant launches, etc.), my field was in strategic communications for global corporates & government entities.
In that role you don’t just need to learn the industry landscape but *EVERYTHING* that has the potential to impact it.
Unions
Proposed regulations
Global changes (what’s happening in other parts of the world)
Case in point: the world of short term & agricultural insurance meant ZERO to me until 2012 when I was first introduced to a new client. As a publicly traded company we could get honest-to-goodness editorial pieces in the media (NOT paid for) if we wrote ‘em well (I did) and came at the story from a NEWSWORTHY angle.
So I needed to understand, and write about, things that were going to impact the public AND the industry (ie: everything from uninsured motorists to extreme weather conditions).
As a newbie in the PR field I was blessed to be surrounded by former newsroom journalists to light my way; and I’m SO thankful for that opportunity to have learned in that way.
So when you come to me, from an industry I’ve *NEVER* been a part of, it’s MY JOB to uncover the language, the concerns, the regulations, the competition, your audience that surrounds you every single day.
Here’s a *few* ways I do that:
1) Me, You & a Zoom: conversation is key to *everything* I do. Asking the right questions and then listening. A LOT of listening.

2) Google search: Google helps me to dive into aspects of your business that are most important: key words, and paying attention to what “others” have looked for tells me some things that are most important. Predictive text on my phone drives me CRAZY but Google knows what it’s doing here.

3) Websites, forums, articles that other people have written help me to see what concerns your industry (ie: I’ve never paid $$$ to advertise a wedding business or personally felt the feels of what it’s like to get ripped off by my mechanic but by reading horror stories I can piece together the lay of the land).

4) Your people: your own audience can tell me a LOT about the industry: the good, the bad, and the ugly (and this is a great way to learn how to build even BETTER offers, but more about that another time).

That means:
📈 Helping you set data-backed goals for your launch.
📊 Sharing the benchmarks the copy should hit through the funnel (conversion rates, show up rates, watch rates, open rates, click through rates – you get the picture!)
✔️ Going through a launch debrief to see if those numbers were reached.
✏️ Making a plan for tweaks, edits and changes if necessary to reach those numbers.

I don’t even know how to craft a haiku. 🤦

And I couldn’t split an infinitive if I WANTED to. 🪓
But it’s ok. *Whew*
Because I DO care deeply about people–YOUR people.
What they think and feel. We can dig in deep to understand WHY your humans react the way they do.
Ever since college when I studied Communications Tactics to better understand how people convey (and often cover up) real motives. 10+ years in PR helping clients persuade, influence, and communicate with their audience.
Setting up focus groups and interviewing hundreds of clients’ clients to figure out what made them buy (or NOT buy).
Thousands of hours of research and asking a million questions, like “why does THAT matter”, and finding out that when someone says they want one thing, what they REALLY want is to FEEL something specific.
Pulling out stories and writing your launch copy so it sounds like it came from your heart and your potential customers’ head (‘cause it does).
And THAT’S what makes a great sales copywriter. So for now I’ll leave the song writing to those people up in Nashville and do what I do best. Writing your launch copy.

- At a 2-3% conversion rate (CVR), that’s only 20-30 people turning into customers!
It's tough when you work so hard and don’t see the results you expected (I get it).

I can't help but feel a little shocked and irritated right now. Seriously, who even does this? 😤
Out of the. blue, this guy pops into my Messenger trying to sell me something after I posted a question in a group. I don't know him, he doesn't know me, and he's throwing quotes my way without a clue of what the real problem is (honestly, because I didn't understand the issue either, so he "could" tell me anything).
Long story short, it was a small problem, and someone else in the Facebook group actually helped me out IN the thread.
They took the time to get more info and helped me in minutes.
It made me realize the importance of SERVING over SELLING. Especially online. It's too easy to get caught up in $$$, but the real value comes from deeply understanding your people. 🌟

As online DFY service providers, our focus should be on providing solutions, not just making a sale. Taking the time to understand the customer journey and offering genuine support so we can create a lasting impact.

Be CRAZY DILIGENT about who you hire.
