Sleepy sunny morning โ๏ธ ๐ฆ
Mornings like this reminded me just how much I LOVE wildlife photography! For a moment I felt like a NatGeo photographer creeping through the grass capturing rare photographs of an endangered species! The thought of being able to capture the beauty and composition of an elegant landscape, but have the focus of the image be a majestic animal in its natural habitat is stuff dreams are made of.
FACT- I didnโt travel too far for these shots. There happens to be a property about 5 minutes from home that has these animals roaming the yard year-around, so I decided to take a hike one morning and see what they would give me. I took a bag of apples along just in case they werenโt feeling very social.
The male Eurasian Fallow Deer were losing the velvet around their antlers which makes them look bloody and tattered this time of year. Itโs incredible how fast and how large these deer antlers can get!
The antlers you see here are roughly 6 months old because they fall off every year and have to re-grow a new rack for the rutting season when they might have to fight for mating rights. There is a common miss-conception that horns and antlers are the same things, when in fact antlers must be grown new every year, while horns grow throughout the animal's lifetime. After the rutting season, the buck experiences a tremendous drop in testosterone weakening the osteoclasts at the base of the antlers causing the antlers to just simply fall off, called a โshedโ. Depending on food availability and diet, most bucks will grow a full rack just as spring is at its peak and the antlers will be covered in blood-supplying velvet to help them grow and become strong weapons as quickly as possible. The velvet will then fall off before the rut to allow the antlers to become hard and strong.
At first, I thought that shooting through the fence would get in the way but actually, most of the shots through the fence either have a cool bokeh effect, or you donโt really notice the fence pattern blur much at all!
Which shot is your favorite? I really can't decide.
