Another great photoshoot in the books. The weather doesn't always cooperate but we just have to pivot and make it great anyway.

Looking forward to a busy summer of capturing beauty and helping businesses share their stories.

Happy Fathers Day to you awesome Dads out there!

As someone who has lost a father, watching these two during a recent photoshoot was special and really gave me the feels!

Itโ€™s a beautiful thing watching hard working sons and dads love and respect each other, and yet enjoy giving each other a hard time! Love it!

Thank you Oscar and Sal for allowing me to peek into your legacy and capture you in your element, I am blessed to have spent the day with you two.

What a fun project! Sunrise vineyard work at its finest.

Morning ritual at the vineyards! At the heart of any great wine are the farmworkers who tend and care for the vineyards. Tres Perlas is no exception and our years of vineyard management experience are a foundation to our exceptional wines.

As the west coast smolders and burns I find myself longing for clean mountain air again! Itโ€™s quarantine 2.0 over here trying to keep the smoke at bay.

I feel like Iโ€™m always complaining about how much it rains up here in the PNW and yet itโ€™s nowhere to be found when we need it the most.

This shot was taken just a few minutes after my last post photo from the ground. Amazing how quickly a summer storm can roll in and change the mood completely, can you spot the eagle in this one? ๐Ÿฆ… ๐ŸŒฒ ๐Ÿ”

Thoughts and prayers for all those affected by these horrible forest fires.

I still get butterflies when flying the drone, especially when I come across shots like these! ๐ŸŒฒโ›ฐ

Perspective changes EVERYTHING. What seemed like a little opening in the trees from the road turned into a mind-blowing alpine meadow and stream feeding into a natural spring.

I was able to hike out a little way into the clearing to get some shots with the ole Z6 and just at this moment, an Eagle was soaring a thermal above the spring, but with the wide-angle of the lens, unfortunately, you can't really see it. I didn't want to get too close not knowing how territorial it would be in the air towards the drone. I'll just wait for to put a 400mm lens on these things ๐Ÿ˜‰

This image is a 6-image composite that I cropped down for this composition.

Sleepy sunny morning โ˜€๏ธ ๐ŸฆŒ

Mornings like this reminded me just how much I LOVE wildlife photography! For a moment I felt like a NatGeo photographer creeping through the grass capturing rare photographs of an endangered species! The thought of being able to capture the beauty and composition of an elegant landscape, but have the focus of the image be a majestic animal in its natural habitat is stuff dreams are made of.

FACT- I didnโ€™t travel too far for these shots. There happens to be a property about 5 minutes from home that has these animals roaming the yard year-around, so I decided to take a hike one morning and see what they would give me. I took a bag of apples along just in case they werenโ€™t feeling very social.

The male Eurasian Fallow Deer were losing the velvet around their antlers which makes them look bloody and tattered this time of year. Itโ€™s incredible how fast and how large these deer antlers can get!
The antlers you see here are roughly 6 months old because they fall off every year and have to re-grow a new rack for the rutting season when they might have to fight for mating rights. There is a common miss-conception that horns and antlers are the same things, when in fact antlers must be grown new every year, while horns grow throughout the animal's lifetime. After the rutting season, the buck experiences a tremendous drop in testosterone weakening the osteoclasts at the base of the antlers causing the antlers to just simply fall off, called a โ€œshedโ€. Depending on food availability and diet, most bucks will grow a full rack just as spring is at its peak and the antlers will be covered in blood-supplying velvet to help them grow and become strong weapons as quickly as possible. The velvet will then fall off before the rut to allow the antlers to become hard and strong.

At first, I thought that shooting through the fence would get in the way but actually, most of the shots through the fence either have a cool bokeh effect, or you donโ€™t really notice the fence pattern blur much at all!

Which shot is your favorite? I really can't decide.

Here are a few tips and tricks on how to direct your subject during outdoor photoshoots.โ €
โ €
#1 It is very important as the photographer to talk to your subject- Whether they are a professional model or have never had their photo taken in their life, itโ€™s important to gain a rapport with them to make them feel at ease, allowing for more smooth, less contrived movements during the shoot. โ €
โ €
#2 Use your environment- Take a look around you and use available lighting and natural objects to highlight your subject or create natural leading lines and compositions. โ €
โ €
#3 Capture actions- using actions instead of simple poses captures movement in the piece and creates a more dynamic, compelling image. โ €

I havenโ€™t laughed this hard in a while! It all started with me wanting to take some photos of the Colombia River Gorge during golden hour, but my mate and I ended up getting distracted by a brewery that was actually OPEN and then captivated by the magnificent . I ending up with these epic shots, none of which I went to get, but looking back I wouldnโ€™t have it any other way. What do you think heโ€™s doing in the 3rd pic?

I first fell in love with photography because of Macro-Photography. It has a unique way of making you feel like youโ€™ve gone to another planet or dimension with its soft ethereal colors and clarity. I suppose another positive outcome of quarantine is it has given me an excuse to get back to my roots.โ €
