River Flood Warnings In Effect

Due to heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby – both in Horry County and to our north – area rivers are expected to reach flood stage beginning today and water levels will stay elevated into the coming week.

River gauges can be viewed at: https://water.noaa.gov/

Waccamaw River
At Longs – Minor flood stage by early tomorrow. Currently forecast to crest at 13.1 ft.
Near Conway – Minor flood stage by early tomorrow. Currently forecast to crest at 11.6 ft.

Little P*e Dee River
Near Galivants Ferry – Major flood stage by Sunday morning. Currently forecast to crest at 12.6 ft.

Additional rises are possible pending final rainfall. Those downstream of the gauges listed should be mindful of water rises as well.

The river forecast has water levels well-below historic levels.

5pm update from WMBF News: The 5:00 PM advisory on Debby has it situated 85 miles south of Myrtle Beach and CRAWLING to the north-northeast at 3 mph. On this pace, it will come ashore after midnight tonight. It's important to note that unlike a well organized tropical storm or hurricane, Debby's worst weather is located 100 miles from the center. That will keep the strongest winds off shore, but rounds of rain and gusts of 40 to 50 mph will continue through much of the night.

From WMBF: 2:00 PM WEDNESDAY - Flash flood threat increasing across Horry County. A persistent band of tropical downpours is setting up across Horry County. This band has dropped up to 2 inches of rain in the last two hours. With Debby's slow movement, this band will continue to push rounds of heavy rain onshore. The North Strand is currently under a FLOOD ADVISORY but may be upgraded to a FLASH FLOOD WARNING if the heavy rain persists.

From WMBF: Tropical Storm Debby just strengthened by 20 mph in three hours. Hurricane hunters found sustained winds of 60 mph now with Debby and are currently forecasting a 65 mph tropical storm near landfall.

The speed of Debby is also much faster which should help with our overall rainfall totals.

Based on the latest forecast information, there is a major chance of flooding along the Black River and a moderate chance of flooding along the Santee. We expect maximum wind gusts of about 55 mph, storm surge of 2-4 feet and approximately 10-15 more inches of rain over the next several days. The threat of tornadoes has increased. Officials continue to develop riverine flooding models to offer a better idea of what to expect in terms of river flooding.
