Athens, Georgia's Pylon began in 1979 by guitarist Randall Bewley and bass guitarist Michael Lachowski who were inspired by Punk rock and it's attitude of just pick up and start playing regardless of experience. They practiced in a downtown rented space owned by Curtis Crowe who lived above the studio and became their drummer who marveled at their style of not playing chords but hooks and had their songs memorized before joining. They recruited fellow art student Vanessa Briscoe Hay for vocals because they liked her painting. Naming themselves after the big orange traffic cones you see around road construction, Pylon were championed by local favorites The B-52's who helped them get exposure in New York City where Pylon earned an opening slot for Gang of Four and positive reception. I've always described Pylon as Wire fronted by Patti Smith. Bewley's scratch guitar sound with Lachowski and Crowe's muscular rhythm section create an infectiously edgy and danceable sound that serves as a wonderful canvas for Hay's whisper to a growl vocal that yelps like she's exorcizing something. Mesmerizing stuff. Pylon released their first single Cool b/w Dub later in 1979 and followed up with their classic albums 1980's Gyrate and 1983's Chomp which inspired fellow Athens band R.E.M. to declare Pylon America's best band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QGU1_123Qs

The World's Greatest Party Band The B-52's were born over dinner at an Athens, Georgia Chinese Restaurant in the fall of 1976 by friends Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson. Naming themselves after the giant bouffant hairstyle popular among certain Southern women in the 50's, The B-52's played their first shows at parties around Athens in early 1977 but by the end of the year were taking their party to New York City and playing CBGBs. The B-52's gained massive attention for their style and sound which paired kitsch and 50's Sci-Fi with 60's surf guitar and the call and response vocals of Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson. The B-52's 1979 self-titled debut is the first of their many stellar releases and it is rumored to have been so loved by John Lennon that it inspired him to begin recording again. Boston, Massachusetts' Blake Babies were formed in 1986 by John Strohm, Freda Love, and Juliana Hatfield and were named by the poet Allen Ginsberg following a reading at Harvard University when they raised their hand and asked him to name their band. Their first album 1987's 'Nicely, Nicely' was released on their own label and their sound was favorably compared to fellow Boston band Throwing Muses and R.E.M. After releasing the E.P. 'Slow Learner' on English singer, songwriter Billy Bragg's Utility label they were picked up by Mammoth records for 1989's 'Earwig' and 1990's 'Sunburn' which was hailed by Allmusic as the last great college rock album. Earlier recordings featured front man Evan Dando of the Lemonheads on bass whom Strohm had played with before and who began a relationship with Hatfield. The band broke up after the release of 1991's E.P. 'Rosy Jack World' and Juliana Hatfield signed a solo contract and began a long and successful career which still continues today.

Olympia, Washington's Beat Happening are an Indie pop, lo-fi band formed by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis, and Bret Lunsford at Evergreen State College in 1982 whose catchy, infectious music perfectly epitomized the anti-corporate side of college music. They toured with punk bands like Fugazi and were treated poorly by the mohawked, leather-wearing punk crowds for wearing their cardigans and Calvin Johnson's shimmying, pogoing non-threating presence as they furthered the idea of the nerdy punk. Think Talking Heads without the world music influences. They helped bring anti-corporate rock to it's earliest acceptances and were admired by many of their contemporaries like Kathi Wilcox of Bikini Kill and Kurt Cobain who had performed with Johnson and even got their label, K Records, tattooed on his arm to remind him to 'stay a child'.
Beat Happening's albums 1985's 'Beat Happening', 1988's 'Jamboree', 1989's 'Black Candy', 1991's 'Dreamy' and 1992's 'You Turn Me On' were all critically acclaimed despite their primitive recording techniques and disregard for the technical aspects of making music.
Beat Happening, despite not having played together live since the early 90's, have never broken up and have been invited by modern artists like Modest Mouse to perform with them but have politely declined.

Influenced by L.A.'s Punk Rock scene Hole was formed in 1989 in Los Angeles by singer, guitarist Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson after Eric responded to Courtney's ad in Recycler which said 'I want to start a band. My influences are Big Black, Sonic Youth, and Fleetwood Mac.' Love had originally wanted to name the band Sweet Baby Crystal Powered by God, but went with the name Hole instead. She settled on Hole citing a conversation with her mother who told her she couldn't live her life with a hole running through her and the sexual implications of the word. Courtney Love had tried to start a few bands along the West Coast before and even had a brief stint with Faith No More experimenting with various sounds from which she found inspiration.
Using borrowed equipment from fellow L.A. bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and working as a stripper to support her band, Hole began to make a reputation for themselves with their live shows and their Kim Gordon produced debut 1991's 'Pretty on the Inside'. Courtney Love had gotten Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon to produce their debut for Caroline records by sending a letter to Kim which featured their early singles, a 'Hello Kitty' barrette, and words of admiration for her work. Abrasive, musically and lyrically, 'Pretty on the Inside' was loud, ugly, and musically shocking. Village Voice awarded it album of the year and Spin listed it among the years' best albums. 'Pretty on the Inside' reached number 59 in the UK charts but only released one single with the UK Indie number 1 hit 'Teenage W***e'.
Between 1991 and the 1994 release of Hole's massively successful 'Live Through This' the band's sound was taken in a more melodic and controlled direction by Love causing some rifts and shifts within her band. During this time she had began her relationship with Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain and had given birth to their child which influenced her songwriting and musical approach. An early example of this is the 1993 non-album single "Beautiful Son' which was inspired by Kurt Cobain's love for wearing women's clothing as a child. The single featured a picture of her husband Kurt at age 7. Written in 1992 'Beautiful Son' is a wonderful bridge between the sonic chaos of 1991's 'Pretty on the Inside' and the alternative bliss of 1994's 'Live Through This'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGniRhAlH0g

The incredible English singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Polly Jean (PJ) Harvey began her celebrated career in 1988 with long time collaborator John Parish's band Automatic Dlamini as a vocalist, guitarist, and sax player. In 1991 she began the PJ Harvey Trio and released 1992's 'Dry' and threw everything she had into the record believing it to be her first and last with 'Dress' and 'Sheela-Na-Gig' getting airplay and the later becoming a number 9 Modern Rock hit in September 1992. 'Dry' peaked at number 11 on the UK charts and made the best of 1992 lists for many different publications. Rolling Stone named it number 70 in it's 100 Greatest Debut Albums of all time and NME awarded 'Dry' number 151 in it's 500 Greatest Albums list. 'Dry' is also listed in the book '1001 Albums to hear before you die'.

Bristol, UK's Portishead was formed in 1991 after instrumentalist Geoff Barrow and singer/songwriter Beth Gibbons met during a break from an Enterprise Allowance course that allowed unemployed British citizens a weekly 40 pounds a week for starting their own business. Finding common musical ground and a love for film noire Portishead's 1994 'Dummy' sounds like a dark and beautiful soundtrack for an unmade film and features a still for the album's cover from a short movie the band made called 'To Kill a Dead Man'. The spy film was 11 minutes long and and involved an assassination and it's aftermath. Cool stuff. Long associated with trip-hop Portishead was rock experimentation with Gothic undertones and a dramatic flair that fit more in line with Serge Gainsbourg, Scott Walker, and Nick Cave.
'Dummy' was universally celebrated upon it's release and is considered one of trip hop's greatest achievements with the hits 'Sour Times', 'Numb', and 'Glory Box' furthering it's success. It won 1995's Mercury Prize and was named number 419 in Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest albums of all time.

Great Yarmouth, UK's shoegaze band Catherine Wheel who named themselves after a firework which was named after a medieval torture device began in 1990 by singer-guitarist Rob Dickinson (cousin of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson), guitarist Brian Futter, bassist Dave Hawes who was previously in the Joy Division influenced band Eternal, and drummer Neil Sims. Their effects heavy multilayered guitar sound awash with feeback and the vocal talents of Dickinson produced some of the early 90's best songs like 'I Want to Touch You' and 'Black Metallic' from 1992's 'Ferment', 'Crank' from 1993's 'Chrome', and 'Judy Staring at the Sun' with Throwing Muses' Tanya Donnelly and 'Waydown' from 1995's 'Happy Days'. The band were an inspiration for Death Cab for Cutie and Interpol's existence.

Melbourne, Austrailia's Models began in 1978 as a Post-Punk, New Wave band who became very popular in their home continent due to extensive touring with high profile bands visiting Oz. Besides touring with homegrown favorites like Midnight Oil and INXS (who were fans), Models have toured with Ramones, The B-52's, XTC, The Vapors, The Police and David Bowie giving them great experience and massive exposure down under. Many of the headliners became fans and offered contracts for International distribution of their music believing them to be deserving of a wider audience which Models resisted for a while but eventually signed a deal with A&M Records which allowed them to remain on Austrailian label Mushroom Records during a supporting gig for The Police in 1981. Models first album 1980's 'Alphabravocharliedeltaechofoxtrotgolf' was recorded independently before signing with Mushroom Records and became popular due to their extensive touring. An E.P. followed in 1981 called 'Cut Lunch' experimenting with Post-Punk and Dub that produced the popular live favorite 'Atlantic Romantic' and some radio airplay with 'Two Cabs to the Toucan'. A second album released later in the year called 'Local and/or General' that rose to number 30 on Austrailia's album chart despite producing no charting singles. Models took some time to rework their line-up add some big drums and danceability, add a more radio friendly singer, and tighten up their songs to create their highly regarded breakthrough album 1983's 'The Pleasure of your Company' which was well received by critics and fans alike rising to number 12 on the album charts and producing the number 16 hit 'I Hear Motion'. 'The Pleasure of Your Company' was listed in the top 50 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums. Models fourth album 1985's 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight' achieved even greater success rising to number 3 in the Austrailian album charts and producing five hit singles with their second single 'Barbados' reaching number 2 and their third single 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight' reaching number 1 and was the only number 1 single on the Australian singles chart for 1985 by an Australian artist. 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight' gave Models a top 40 U.S. hit when the album hit American shores the following year. After releasing their fifth and final album 'Models Media' in 1986 which hit number 30 in Austrailia and produced three top 40 singles, Models called it a day.

Tubeway Army was formed in London by 18 year old Gary Webb who was a prolific songwriter with some previous recording experience in his previous band Mean Street before becoming guitarist for the band Lazer. Tubeway Army began playing shows on the punk scene around London and managed to score a record deal with the Beggars Banquet label. They released two heavy guitar punk singles in early 1978 with 'That's Too Bad','Oh! Didn't I Say', and 'Bombers','Blue Eyes','OD Receiver' which failed to chart. Later that year Tubeway Army's first self-titled album dropped and while still bearing a guitar punk sound saw a couple of changes. First, Gary Webb had changed his name to Gary Numan and second, saw the introduction of the Minimoog synthesizer which just happened to be in the recording studio during their session. For 1979's follow up 'Replicas' Numan employed the synths and took lyrical inspiration from his favorite authors Phillip K. Dick and J.G. Ballard for a sci-fi, dystopian vibe to create songs like the enduring 'Down in the Park' and the UK number 1 'Are Friends Electric?' which finished out 1979 as the UK's 4th highest grossing single. Subsequent releases saw Numan drop the Tubeway Army name and record under his new pseudonym Gary Numan to even greater success like with 1980's 'The Pleasure Principal' and it's international number 1 hit 'Cars.'

Manchester, England has produced some major talents from Joy Division, New Order, The Chameleons, The Smiths, Stone Roses, to Happy Mondays whose work bridged the Manchester independent rock music of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, drawing influence from funk, house, and psychedelia to pioneer a sound that would be called Madchester.
Formed in 1980 by brothers Shaun and Paul Ryder they signed with Factory Records on the strength of their self-produced demo and released their first E.P. in 1985 followed by their John Cale produced debut album 'Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out)' in 1987. Confusing title aside, it was a major hit as was their Martin Hannett produced second album 1988's 'Bummed' and their multi-platinum masterpiece 1991's Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne produced 'Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches'. Paul McCartney commented in NME: "I saw the Happy Mondays on TV, and they reminded me of the Beatles in their 'Strawberry Fields' phase." Happy Mondays were fun and for a moment so huge that their sound dubbed 'Madchester' personified it's city's music scene and helped create rave culture.

Manchester's The Stone Roses formed in 1983 by ex-schoolmates Ian Brown and John Squire who started out as a Clash-inspired band called Patrol that used to perform Sweet covers before changing their name to The Waterfront inspired by 'On the Waterfront' and 60's bands before settling on The Stone Roses and taking time to find their own sound. After a self-produced demo was recorded and 100 copies were made with artwork provided by Squire, the band started to gain interest by many who wanted to see their success like Howard Jones ex-manager of Manchester's famous Hacienda Club who helped promote them and producer Martin Hannett who produced their first single 'So Young' in 1985. They started to build a following in Manchester and after another four years of performing and perfecting their songcraft released their self-titled debut. 1989's superb 'The Stone Roses' is now considered one of England's greatest albums producing the singles 'Made of Stone', 'She Bangs the Drums', 'I Wanna be Adored', 'Waterfall', and 'I am the Resurrection'. Popular as the album was by critics, fans of England's popular NME magazine famous for it's reader polls awarded The Stone Roses with Band of the Year, Best New Band, Single of the Year (for 'Fools Gold') and Album of the Year.

Big Audio Dynamite was formed by Mick Jones in 1984 after being fired from The Clash in 1983 due to creative differences. Clash co-founder Mick Jones was embracing a more dance-oriented sound. The Clash continued on with one last disappointing outing without Jones that resulted in 1985's 'Cut the Crap' which ironically didn't cut the crap but embraced it. Meanwhile Big Audio Dynamite's debut 1985's 'This is Big Audio Dynamite' was released to universal acclaim and chart success with 'The Bottom Line', 'E=Mc2', and 'The Medicine Show' all charting in various countries and becoming Top 40 Club Hits in America. Big Audio Dynamite remained in the charts for the next 10 years and even featured some contributions with former Clash-mate Joe Strummer who co-produced Big Audio Dynamite's second album 1986's 'No. 10, Upping Street' and co-wrote five of it's nine tracks.

England's The Three Johns consisted of Mekon's co-founder Jon Langford, John Hyatt, and John Brennan who formed The Three Johns in 1981 right before the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana to be a part of a 'Funk the Wedding' event but were refused permission to play because they were drunk. Nevertheless the band made some records and The Three Johns regularly appeared in the UK Indie Charts during the mid-1980s, with singles such as 'A.W.O.L.', 'Death of the European' (an NME "Single of the Week"), and 'Brainbox (He's a Brainbox)'.

NYC's Band of Susans was an Alternative Rock band that consisted of Robert Poss (Vocals/Guitar), Alva Rogers (Vocals), Ron Spitzer (Drums), and three Susans. Susan Tallman and Susan Lyall played guitars and Susan Stenger played bass and sang. Because of their multi-layed guitar sound Band of Susans were often viewed as an American Shoegaze band and musically had alot in common with bands like My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3. Their career lasted from 1986 to 1996 and though they rocked never found the success of some of their contemporaries. The Ramones are the first known Punk band. They formed in 1974 and took inspiration for their name by Paul McCartney who used to check into hotels in the early Beatles days as Paul Ramon. Every member of the band took Ramone as a surname like brothers, like a team. Their self-titled debut released in April of 1976 predating most known Punk acts by nearly a year and by the time Punk peaked in the summer of 1977 on the strength of debuts by The Clash and S*x Pistols the Ramones had already released two albums and the single 'Sheena is a Punk Rocker' from their upcoming third 'Rocket to Russia'.
Their exciting debut featured songs that were fast and short with most clocking in at under two minutes and though being almost universally admired by critics and beloved by those who experienced their magic was not a commercial success and didn't break the Billboard top 100 album charts stalling at 111. Subsequent releases saw Ramones moving into a poppier direction and lengthing their songs but Ramones always retained that uniqueness that made them one of the most beloved acts in music. Dee Dee wrote most of the songs and Joey sang them all but Dee Dee always voiced the count of 1,2,3,4.

Many of the most recognizable artists of the 80's were developing in the 70's and began on different musical paths before embracing the styles that defined them. Blondie sang in a folk band called 'The Wind and the Willows', Joey Ramone played in a glam rock band called 'Sniper' as Jeff Starship, and Peter Gabriel was the enigmatic frontman for the progressive rock group Genesis.
Peter Brian Gabriel rose to fame as the lead singer of Genesis before going solo in 1975. He launched his solo career with 'Solsbury Hill' in 1977 from his self-titled debut 'Peter Gabriel' which would be the title of his first four albums because he wanted his albums to appear like magazines once a year with the lettering in the same place displaying only his name and a different picture but have come to be 'fan-named' by the picture 1977's 'Peter Gabriel 1: Car', 1978's 'Peter Gabriel 2: Scratch', 1980's 'Peter Gabriel 3: Melt', and 1982's 'Peter Gabriel 4: Security'. Peter Gabriel was an innovator. While performing on tour in support of his third album Gabriel fell back into the crowd in a 'crucifix' position and enjoyed what was one of the first recorded instances of 'crowd-surfing'. During the recording of his third album, Gabriel was one of the first musicians to make popular use of the Fairlight CMI computer that would become so popular with artists throughout the decade because it could be fed a rhythm that could be played continuously throughout the song that helped expand his grooves and ignited his songwriting. He said at the time, "I've got back into a rhythm consciousness. And the writing – particularly with the invention of these drum machines – is fantastic. You can store in their memories rhythms that interest you and excite you. And then the groove will carry on without you, and the groove will be exactly what you want it to be, rather than what a drummer thinks is appropriate for what you're doing." Having had some success with 'Games Without Frontiers' and 'Biko' in the UK, these rhythms led to US success for his fourth self-titled album 1982's 'Peter Gabriel 4: Security' which gave him his first top 40 single 'Shock the Monkey' and the popular 'I Have the Touch'. He then recorded the soundtrack for 1985's 'Birdy' before recording his triple platinum album 1986's 'So' which launched Peter Gabriel into mega-stardom.

The Talking Heads were one of the most vital bands in shaping 80's music and are universally acclaimed. Emerging from the New York Punk scene that brought us Blondie and the Ramones the art-school innovators helped to pioneer new wave music by merging elements of art-rock, punk, funk, and world music with the wonderfully strange while exhibiting a nervously nerdy image. Their debut album 1977's 'Talking Heads: 77' gave us the classic 'Psycho Killer' before the band collaborated with producer Brian Eno on their next three experimental and critically adored albums 'More Songs About Buildings and Food' (1978), 'Fear of Music' (1979), and 'Remain in Light' (1980) reaching the U.S. top 30 for the first time with a cover of Al Green's 'Take Me to the River' and blowing minds with 'Once in a Lifetime' and it's quirky and wonderful video. The next ten years brought Talking Heads great commercial success with 1984's 'Speaking in Tongues' and the massive hit 'Burning Down the House', the celebrated Jonathan Demme directed live concert film 'Stop Making Sense', 1985's hit-producing 'Little Creatures', lead Head's David Byrne 1986 comedy film 'True Stories' with Talking Heads performing the soundtrack, 1988's 'Naked', and their final release 'Sax and Violins' for the 1991 Wim Wenders film 'Until the End of the World' before breaking up to explore new musical avenues. Three of their songs 1977's 'Psycho Killer', 1979's 'Life During Wartime', and 1981's 'Once in a Lifetime' were included among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
