Residents Elect Town of Mooresville’s Fourth Dog Mayor

MOORESVILLE, NC – The Mooresville Youth Council (MYC) is excited to announce the
election of the fourth Dog Mayor of Mooresville. During the MYC’s June 30, 2024,
event, they officially began Reya’s term as the new Dog Mayor.
Each year, the MYC accepts nominations for the Dog Mayor position, allowing residents
and followers to vote on their mayoral choice. The winning dog by number of votes is
then installed to serve a one-year term as the Dog Mayor of Mooresville. MYC members
work with various Town departments to coordinate the process as well as get the Dog
Mayor involved in events, activities, and more.
“I have had a chance to meet Reya on a couple occasions and she is wonderful addition
to our Town,” said Mayor Chris Carney. “The voters got it right and do a great job!

Reya is a 12-year-old Pit Bull, who has overcome various medical struggles. She’s had
two knee surgeries (known as TPLO), had a dew claw removed because of a bone
infection, and struggled with terrible skin issues. Reya’s owner Ashley says the Dog
Mayor contest came at the perfect time for their family.
“We lost Reya’s fur brother, Rufio, in March due to bladder cancer,” said Ashley Potts.
“We’re thankful for the Mooresville Youth Council for this yearly tradition. It came at the perfect time for our little family!”
Reya is passionate about healthy eating, breed awareness, and

Sheldon’s K9s. She can often be found strolling Downtown Mooresville. Part of Reya’s duties include attending various Town of Mooresville events, including Bands, Brew BBQ in September.
Reya also plans to attend non-Town sponsored events and gatherings throughout the next year as well as visit Town facilities to learn more about how Mooresville serves its residents and visitors. Reya and her owners encourage people to say hello if they see them.

Reya is Mooresville’s fourth Dog Mayor. In 2021, Daisy became the first Dog Mayor of Mooresville. In 2022, Buttercup was elected Dog Mayor, followed by Elmer in 2023

Town of Mooresville Recognized for 15 th Year as Tree City USA
MOORESVILLE, NC – The Town of Mooresville recently earned recognition as a 2023 Tree City USA. This is Mooresville’s 15 th year as a Tree City USA town. The Arbor Day Foundation awarded Mooresville the recognition because the town met the
program’s four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and
hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Foundation says communities worldwide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health, and well-being. It says the Town of Mooresville has “taken steps to create a brighter, greener future.” Mooresville is one of more than 3,600 Tree City USA communities.

“We are thrilled to once again be recognized as a Tree City USA town,” said Interim Manager Jim Landon. “Our tree canopies are important to our residents, and we strive to continue this
important recognition.”

Tree City USA, founded in 1976, is a partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation, U.S. Forest
Service, and National Association of State Foresters. For more information on the program, visit

This Summer Film making and acting camp in Mooresville at Masterworks School of the Arts, Inc. by Benny Vink

Benny Vink started as an actor, but after his leading part on the silver screen he decided to go to the other side of the camera and produce films.

At the IBC film convention in Amsterdam, he took many master classes from award winning directors, camera and sound crew as he wanted to learn from the best.

Vink has made content for big organizations, documentaries that ended up in the movie theaters, television and on streaming services.

At the same time, he founded Pure Media Academy to teach film and acting, and the most important lesson, that films are telling stories. His last Pure Media production can be found on Amazon Prime. At this time, Vink is producing the film called "A Father's Heart" and he founded a news channel called Mooresville News.

Benny believes that the measure of success is not how much money made or awards won, but by how many people are inspired. "I like to invest in the next generation," Vink says, "and teach them all I have learned and to inspire them to bring back creativity and good storytelling in filmmaking."

Mooresville Fire-Rescue to Relaunch Explorers Program for Teens

MOORESVILLE, NC – Mooresville Fire-Rescue is excited to announce the return of the Mooresville Fire-Rescue (MFR) Explorers Program. This program provides 14–18-year-olds invaluable experience and knowledge of the fire service, including what our firefighters do every day. Teens interested in the program can attend an Open House on May 25, 2024, from 9 a.m.-noon, at the Fire Training Center (2523 Charlotte Highway).

Explorers will get an in-person, hands-on experience as a firefighter, including training alongside MFR firefighters, riding along in the fire truck to various calls, and getting a better understanding of how rewarding it is to serve and protect our community. Firefighter Brian Borst is a graduate of the MFR Explorers Program and encourages any interested teens to apply. He says the program opened his eyes to what firefighters do, beyond what people see in movies.

“I learned everything about turnout gear, fire trucks, extinguishers, water cans, just all your different tools. A day in the life of what the fire department does,” said Borst.

Engineer Sammy Webster also participated in the Explorer Program when he was younger. He says the program can be beneficial now and long-term.

“It can get your foot in the door fulltime somewhere, but you will learn a lot of the basic knowledge. I remember some of the ride-alongs we did, we caught some good fires! I got to do a lot and see a lot,” said Webster.

Borst and Webster are two of four Explorer graduates that are currently employed at Mooresville Fire-Rescue.

“We are thrilled to restart this program and allow teens in the area to learn what we do and prepare them for a lifelong career in the fire service,” said Chief Curt Deaton. “They get to be part of the team and really experience what we do – from responding to car crashes to fires and other emergencies. The invaluable experiences they get as Explorers sets them up for a successful fulltime program here or at another fire department.”

Borst says the training, insight, and experience he gained in the program solidified his decision to become a firefighter.

“My grandfather was an FDNY fireman, so I kind of knew at a younger age this is what I wanted to do. But this sealed the deal when I joined the Explorer Program when I was 15,” said Borst.

There are rules and requirements that teens must meet to become an Explorer, which are detailed in the application online at MooresvilleNC.gov/Explorers. Teens must have a C+ average or higher. The Explorers will meet, on average, one to two times per month.

Teens interested in joining the MFR Explorers Program can attend MFR’s Open House on May 25, 2024, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Fire Training Center (2523 Charlotte Hwy.). Parents must be in attendance with their teen. Questions? Please contact Captain Ryan Harrell by calling 704-799-4227 or emailing [email protected].
