CHART YOUR COURSE TO WHERE THE AUDIENCE IS

When you come up #1 in the Search for 'Smooth Jazz' even the weekly Industry Charts get mega attention on SmoothJazz.com Global!

Over 210k Visitors checked out SmoothJazz.com's Streaming, Airplay and Listener Charts in June 2024, while less than 16k visited another airplay charting resource and barely 5k checked out a radio format network.

We can't show the Billboard Smooth Jazz Chart since it's behind a paywall and isn't accessible to traffic monitoring, leading one to believe that it's the least viewed chart in the genre since it's only available to those willing to pay.

FROM OPPOSITE CORNERS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY : Two noteworthy reports this week... Radio's pulse weakens and Streaming picks up momentum.

📻As Broadcast Radio Struggles to Compete, Morning Show Hosts Are Losing Their Jobs - Amid heavy debt loads, advertising declines and competition from streaming, stations are eliminating often highly paid A.M. drive talent.

🛜Spotify’s 7 Million New Subscribers Bumps Revenue Up 20% - The streaming giant said it added 1 million more subscribers than forecast for the second quarter, boosting revenue and profit margins.

Spotify CEO confirms a ‘deluxe’ version with hi-fi audio is coming soon / Daniel Ek says the add-on will bring Spotify’s monthly subscription to around $17 or $18. Aside from better audio, customers can expect ‘a lot more control.’

This is what you force us gals to do when you don’t welcome us! When left to our own devices and with nothing left to lose, we do amazing things. And then you get mad at us for that!

American guitarist thought to be the first woman to produce, engineer, arrange and promote music on her own rock and roll music label.

Jackson founded the Moon Records label in Memphis in 1956. Unable to break into the Sun label's stable of male artists, she received the advice and assistance of RCA Records' Chet Atkins in forming this new label to release her music. She began releasing and promoting on the label singles she recorded in her home studio, serving as engineer, producer and arranger. The artists recorded included her and a small family of early rock and roll, rockabilly, and country music performers whom she recruited from several Southern states.

Her Moon Records label was the oldest continuously operating label in Memphis at the time of her death in 2004. The 50s Rock on the Moon of Memphis, Tennessee + an Oddity, a compilation album of the label's 1950s singles, was released on vinyl in the early 1980s and was later sold on compact disc until her death in 2004.

Here's my response to the Gorov Music Marketing post on Friday, July 12, 2024 titled:

"RADIO AIRPLAY AND CHARTING ARE THE MOST POWERFUL PROMOTIONAL TOOLS FOR A JAZZ ARTIST A JAZZ RECORDING ARTIST BY FAR."

This comment was removed by GMM.🤔 Gate Keepers gotta gate keep?

--

This statement is 100% true... If it were 1994!
Up here in 2024, most Smooth Jazz radio stations are in smaller U.S. markets, at colleges and high schools, and/or on HD frequencies. Only a handful can monitor their audience.

Receiving airplay on terrestrial radio used to be one of the only ways for a recording artist to be discovered.

There is no question that Gorov Music Marketing is the cream of the crop when it comes to the art of radio promotion, with Cliff Gorov setting the bar of success for countless of world-renowned artists. He has created a legacy with commitment and kindness, with his family following suit. I have been blessed to know Cliff for more than half of my life!

Dropping a statement like this on social media however, indicates that there's concern or perhaps an uneasiness about the relevancy of this work in our industry today. Shouting out that something is still relevant isn't going to stop the trajectory of time.

Believe me, I get it. I started out as a DJ in 1979 and then MTV disrupted my career choice a few short years later. Remember the song, "Video Killed the Radio Star"?

It's not so much about a medium (radio, TV, Internet, social media), this is really about influence. Where do the people go for their music in 2024?

Let’s have a show of hands from those who are listening to music on terrestrial radio.

If you are, then you know that in today's radio landscape the only way to identify an artist, is if there is an announced intro or backsell. Most AM/FM stations don't offer an interface for their listeners to see cover art or link to digital distribution and websites that help with artist brand development and revenue streams.

If your song falls in the middle of a set, you're more than likely not going to be introduced or back announced and if you're an instrumental artist, you will literally just blend into the next song, which is actually the opposite of exposure.

And if charting is indeed the "most powerful promotional tool,” then let's poll the last 2 years of Billboard Smooth Jazz #1 artists and find out how many of them are headlining Jazz Festivals around the world on a regular basis.

You will find that there is little to no correlation between charting success and booking clout. That's because talent buyers typically don’t go through the paywall to subscribe to the Billboard Charts, when they can access the pulse of the music industry on Spotify, which offers event promoters complete access to artist brand health, translating to ticket sales.

Artist streaming numbers and monthly listeners are transparent on Spotify and available for all to see. The more monthly listeners you have, the more bookable you are.

I work with over 100 event producers a year, and I have produced my own concert & festival events for 30 years, event producers, like myself, mostly care about how many tickets an artist will sell and radio airplay doesn't always mean an artist can sell out a venue.

If performing is your goal, radio airplay & charting is not the most important path to get you there.

The world just isn't listening to terrestrial radio the way we did back in the day. For many reasons, listeners like to control their music and of course the audio quality on FM is challenged compared to digital streaming platforms.

Back when radio was the influencing medium for music sales, radio promoters were often hired by recording labels who influenced radio programmers and DJs to play the music they were pitching. This led listeners to the record stores.

Unless you were on a recording label, most radio promoters were out of reach for the independent artist and this is probably one of the areas where the term "gatekeeper" could come into play.

Since traditional music sales have gone away for the most part, and the revenue streams for recording artists are now more abundant on digital streaming platforms, it's the playlist curators, social media content providers and Movie/TV music directors that are replacing radio program directors & DJs as influencers and the gate is swinging wide open for independents.

60,000 tracks are released per day on Spotify - That's one new track uploaded to the platform every 1.4 seconds. Just let that sink in.

Spotify paid out $9 Billion to recording artists in 2023, and half of that ($4.5 Billion) was paid out to independent artists with less than 100k monthly listeners!

In 2024 terrestrial Smooth Jazz radio stations may reach hundreds of listeners in their communities with low technology, while digital streaming platforms like Spotify reach hundreds of thousands, if not millions of listeners with curated Smooth Jazz playlists offering high technology allowing streamers countless opportunities to discover new music and new artists.

We're also seeing a tremendous connection between social media and streaming performance. In fact, TikTok has changed music, and the industry is hustling to catch up!
The script has been flipped and for those who don't think that social media is driving the train, then you may not be paying close enough attention.

Take Tai Verdes, a young man who worked for a Verizon store in Southern California. After rehearsing in his car for 6 months, released a single on TikTok and after going viral, he received support to release a full album and was booked on a 22 city tour across the U.S!

TikTok fans would go from his music posts to his Spotify profile and YouTube channel, building his brand to over 5M monthly listeners with singles averaging over 300M streams or $1 million paid out per single on Spotify!!

Consumer behavior has changed! According to music industry analyst Tatiana Cirisano, social media users are more likely to do more "lean-forward activities" like creating playlists, listening to full albums on streaming or buying artist merchandise and 40% of TikTok users pay a monthly subscription for music compared to 25% of the general population.

Social Media has changed music listening from being a one-way relationship where you listen to a song on the radio, to something that you can participate in, like adding it to a public playlist or creating your own video with it.
We need to embrace UGC (user-generated content). Isn't this the entire purpose for recording music? To make music that moves people. Meaningful enough to motivate listeners to participate in your songs. This brings exposure and career sustainability with increased revenue opportunities.

This IS the world we live in.

Today's promotional tools for recording artists must include a focus on artist brand health. Primarily consistency with social media and streaming releases as well as your on-line presence. THESE are the most powerful promotional tools at present time.

Waiting for radio promoters to accommodate new music releases can be detrimental to artist brand health and will interrupt revenue returns.

The entire streaming culture is based on consistent, timely music releasing which is the opposite of how radio and especially radio promoter’s function.

I have always encouraged my radio promoter friends to think of the future. We don't live in a world that stays in the past. We must take our skills and repurpose our tools to do what we're compelled to do.

I have not only been disrupted as a life-long, music industry professional, but I have also been disruptive.

Innovating global music streaming was met with disdain. Launching our own global jazz streaming platform in 2000 (before iTunes, Facebook, Spotify, SiriusXM and TikTok) was even dismissed by the industry.

The "gatekeepers" at the time were none too pleased with an independent platform created by artists for artists, that didn't conform to the single-driven, synchronized release schedule and overly consulted process of the time.

People are oddly resistant to change... But isn't that the one consistent thing we can count on?

It's come to my attention that gate keepers are trying to creep back into Smooth Jazz!

Certain industry radio airplay charts have decreed that independent artists with "vanity labels" are no longer allowed to represent their own administration within the structure of these charts without a record promoter.

BTW, "vanity labels" are recording labels that have been founded by recording artists... Like The Beatles (Apple), Madonna (Maverick Records), Prince (Paisley Park), Eminem (Shady Records), Jay-Z (Roc-A-Fella) and I'm sure you can contribute to this list.

Meanwhile Spotify revealed that it made a record payout of $4.5 Billion to independent artists and labels in 2023.

Significantly, it marks the first year ever that indies (including vanity labeled artists) accounted for about half of what the entire industry generated on Spotify, which totaled $9 Billion!

We've always believed that independence is the life force of this genre and SmoothJazz.com Global has been creating paths 'round gate keepers since 2000!

We've been leveling the playing field for independent artists for 25 years and will continue to do so despite the absurd initiatives to exclude independents.
