What does it look like when you have it like you want it?

My first experience with executive coaching was with two badass Black women executive coaches who asked me and my peers expansive, open-ended questions, encouraged us to visualize success, think big and believe we were the difference makers in the public service sector.

A special thanks to the National Forum for Black Public Administrators Executive Leadership Institute (NFBPA- ELI Program) for the foresight to provide this valuable service to young public administrators in local government.

I never forgot the question, and asked it of myself and others whenever clarity was needed over the years. Ironically, I asked it again January, 2023 when considering the opportunity to join the inaugural cohort of Hello Seven Certified Coaches.

Right then, my decision was made to prepare for a career pivot from public service to business coaching. My business mission is to create space for women and people of color to build seven-figure businesses with self-publishing as a stream of income.

Why?

Because women and POC deserve to be part of the wealth gap closure AND because when disenfranchised people are given the chance to build wealth, they pay it forward.

Focus mindset vs. Actual activities

I took a week to work exclusively on my business. It was awesome and there’s even more I wanted to do but did not get around to all of the tasks.

I’m back at my career job tackling a full week of work that is important and urgent. I got home, made a PB&J and went to bed.

Today my mind started a reprimand that I need to work on my business. It tried to trigger an overwhelmed feeling of not being able to reach business goals because of career work.

This happens in writing too. You have to participate in life in ways that allow you to pay rent or mortgage, care for children, parents etc. Life can be a big distraction to completing your manuscript.

My response to my mind: Just because I have to put the job’s work and life responsibilities before my business / writing some days this week doesn’t mean I’m not focused or that I’m slacking. I’m balancing.

Sometimes we just need to shut the mental messaging down with the truth.

The new year hype is simmering down as we move toward February, 2023. How are you feeling about that? Did January go too fast for you to get a great start on your writing, publishing or business goals?

Here's a secret 🤫That time marker only has the significance you give it. I want you to continue to feel hopeful and excited about what you're going to accomplish in 2023. Just carry on with executing your plan as planned. Don't put pressure on yourself about your abilities because we reached 1/31. Keep going.
