You may know the Folger family for their popular brand of instant coffee, but they also built the sprawling property at what is now the highly-frequented Wunderlich Park. Central to the estate is its gorgeous stable, which originally contained 16 stalls, a carriage room, living quarters, and some say even chandeliers and a marble fireplace. Steeped in the Peninsula’s opulent past, read more about the history of this legendary landmark in this month’s PUNCH or go to the digital version in our bio.

“My idea with SIP is to make it super exclusive, super intimate,” says singer/songwriter Patrick Davis, the founder of Songwriters in Paradise (SIP). “It’s for people who expect the best from their music and the best from their wine.”

With SIP Napa (April 18-21) coming up, PUNCH’s contributing editor Sheri Baer brings us the story behind this annual festival series that blends music, wine, food and friendship. Limited to 150 passes, the immersive experience features private performances at acclaimed Napa wineries. The Harvest Inn plays host, adding epic late night “sing along” porch parties into the mix. Read all about Patrick’s vision for SIP in this month’s PUNCH (page 41) or go to the digital version in our bio.

“I tell people we do everything with love. We genuinely do.”

Although Lean Ma named her popular San Mateo donut shop “Cruel Donuts,” she has always operated the store with an emphasis on kindness and passion. While Lean was initially reluctant to go into the flavorful family business, she realized that the donut market was hungry for a fresh take on the traditional treat. Renowned for its convivial customer service and far-out flavors like strawberry shortcake and crème brûlée, Cruel Donuts is a must-try for any Bay Area local with a sweet tooth. TRG Architecture and Interior Design had their work cut out for them to modernize the 9,000 square foot Hillsborough house that once belonged to Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron, the renowned one-legged tiki bar owner and self-proclaimed inventor of the Mai Tai. Architect Randy Grange opened up the floor plans and interior designer Leslie Lamarre struck an idyllic blend of modern elegance and traditional finishes to use the property’s full potential. “I’m hoping our work can provide a reconnection to a different perspective of how we can engage with nature.”

Jane Kim has always had a talent and passion for painting but didn’t know exactly what she wanted to do with it. She decided to follow her interest in the natural world and crowdfunded her first Migrating Mural project — a series of six murals dedicated to the Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. From there, one job led to another and Jane opened Ink Dwell, an art studio she now runs with her husband Thayer Walker. Jane continues to create murals that encourage viewers to rethink their relationship to nature and its unavoidable intersection with man-made life.
