Antarctica has experienced its highest temperature on record, according to meteorologists at the UN.
The new record of 64.9°F (18.3°C) was set on February 6, 2020, a team at the UN agency the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has revealed.
The reading was captured at the Esperanza Base, an Argentine research station on the Antarctic Peninsula – the northwest tip near to South America, and among the fastest warming regions on Earth.
WMO scientists blamed global warming and said the reading is another reminder that 'climate change requires

This week the government has released its review into the UK’s pitiful rape prosecution rates, issuing an apology to the thousands of survivors let down by the current system, and promising to do better.
While, in the face of such staggering failures, any change is welcome, there’s a feeling among charities and campaign groups that it’s just not enough. One such criticism – that the review failed to adequately include survivor experiences – seems particularly significant to those of us who work directly with survivors.
In March, two years after the review’s launch, a letter was reportedly sent to the government from groups including The End Violence Against Women Coalition (Evaw), Imkaan and Rape Crisis, asking for assurances that survivor “experiences are central to, rather than wholly excluded from, the review”. On the review’s release, Andrea Simo, Evaw’s director, has said: “Unfortunately these recommendations reflect this failure to hear from survivors themselves.”
Sadly this attitude will come as no surprise to most survivors. Time and again it’s demonstrated that their experiences aren’t important when it comes to the judicial system. It’s surely one of the reasons that prosecution and conviction rates are so low in the first place: victims and survivors aren’t given the space to share their experiences in any meaningful way. The search for justice is apparently more about trawling their phone records and ‘reading between the lines’ of their statements, than actually taking the time to listen to what they have to say.
My work collecting accounts from survivors as part of an award-winning project, Survivor Stories, was born from a desire to offer a safe space for those stories to be held. I hope to demonstrate that, while there are sometimes similarities in people’s experiences, there are actually a million different ways for sexual violence to look.

Hong Kong — China's ambitions for a space station of its own rocketed closer to reality on Thursday, as a Shenzhou-12 spacecraft roared to life and lifted its human payload into orbit. Just before dusk, Chinese state media proudly broadcast that the mission's three astronauts had safely boarded the station's core module, known as Tianhe.
The three astronauts will spend the next three months — China's longest manned space mission to date — aboard the bus-sized cylinder. Tianhe is the first of four modules that will eventually become the Tiangong space station. Tiangong, which means Palace of Heaven, is scheduled for completion in just 18 months, by the end of 2022.
"I am excited. It's not every day that anybody puts up a new space station," said Quentin Parker, Director of Space Research at the University of Hong Kong. "They really are serious, I believe, in wanting to emerge as a very senior science power for the benefit of all mankind, not just China."

China expects to complete work on its space station just two years ahead of the scheduled decommissioning and de-orbiting of the International Space Station (ISS), in 2024.
Launched in 1998, the ISS is now almost 23 years old. It cost $150 billion, and the U.S. paid $100 billion of that cost, with the space agencies of Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada footing the rest of the bill.

The number of people who own cryptoassets like bitcoin has jumped by a quarter to 2.3 million over the past year, according to a poll, but experts have expressed concerns about a "terrifying" lack of knowledge of the risks involved.
A survey by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) found that while more people are aware of the existence of cryptocurrencies and otherdigital assets, understanding about what they are is in decline.
It found that 78 per cent of adults have heard of cryptoassets, up from 73 per cent a year ago.
However, of those people, just one in 10 have seen the FCA's warnings that investors could lose all of their money.
Three in 10 people could not correctly identify the definition of a cryptocurrency from a selection of possible answers. One in 7 buyers of crypto said they borrowed money to fund the purchase and one in five said they were motivated by fear of missing out, or "FOMO".
Cryptocurrencies are digital "coins" built on a decentralised database which records all transactions and is secured using complex codes, or cryptography. Because the database, known as a blockchain, is decentralised it does not need a single central organisation like a bank to process transactions.
Although the number of retailers accepting bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, is growing, it remains far from widely used as a medium of exchange.
Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, is one of a number of high-profile figures to have issued a warning about cryptocurrencies

Elon Musk’s SpaceX ignored two warnings from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that launching high-altitude Starship prototypes would violate its launch license – but the company went ahead with the launch anyway.
SpaceX’s violation of its license was “inconsistent with a strong safety culture,” the FAA’s space division chief Wayne Monteith wrote in a letter to SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell, as The Verge reports.
“Although the report states that all SpaceX parties believed that such risk was sufficiently low to comply with regulatory criteria, SpaceX used analytical methods that appeared to be hastily developed to meet a launch window.”
SpaceX told the FAA that the agency’s software was “a source of frustration” and was apparently “shown to be inaccurate at times or overly conservative”. SpaceX did not respond to The Independent’s requests for comment.
The private space company argued that its SN8 rocket, which launched and crashed in December 2020, was safe to fly, according to an apparent five-page report from SpaceX. The FAA models showed that weather conditions like wind speed could make its shockwave a danger to nearby homes.

The hacking group Anonymous has issued a threat to Elon Musk, accusing the billionaire Tesla owner of having liquidated dreams and “destroyed lives” with his tweets about cryptocurrencies.
With just a few words, memes, emojis and likes, the world’s third-richest person has sent the value of cryptocurrencies both diving and soaring in recent months – notably with his jocular backing of dogecoin, followed more recently by sobering claims of concern over bitcoin’s environmental impact.
In the latest turn of the saga, which has seen crypto investors’ fortunes rise and fall, the value of bitcoin dropped seven per cent on Friday after Musk shared a meme about a breakup to his 56 million Twitter followers, which some investors took as an indication that his electric vehicle company could intend to sell off its coins, having purchased $1.5bn-worth in February.
The hacking group claimed his erratic public dalliance with cryptocurrencies “show a clear disregard for the average working person”.
Suggesting that Mr Musk has “enjoyed one of the most favourable reputations of anyone in the billionaire class” by tapping into the desire many people have to live in a world with electric cars and space exploration, a Guy Fawkes mask-clad member of the hactivist group described him as the only CEO of such a company to have “gained a cult following through s***posting and trolling the world on social media”.
In a video viewed more than one million times since it was posted on Saturday, the Anonymous member cited a number of Musk’s past comments and allegations against him as they said it seems his “quest to save the world is more rooted in a superiority and saviour complex than it is an actual concern for humanity”.
In an attempt to illustrate this claim, they referred to an article on conditions at Tesla factories which they described as “intolerable” for workers, and another which said Mr Musk’s fa

A container ship that had been burning for 13 days off the coast of Sri Lanka is beginning to sink, leading to fears about a massive oil spill in the ocean.
MV X-Press Pearl, carrying tonnes of chemicals and plastics had been smouldering for the past 13 days, covering tourist beaches on the western coast with oil and debris.
The Sri Lankan Navy had been working with their Indian counterparts to put out the fire, which, last week, was reported to be under control.
X-Press Feeders, operators of the container ship, confirmed on Tuesday that even though the salvors reported no visible fire aboard the vessel, “smoke is still emitting intermittently.”
Huge amount of debris including plastic pellets and containers have inundated the beaches and clean-up operations have been going on for almost a week now. But experts now fear an even greater maritime disaster in the country should the 278 tonnes of oil and 50 tonnes of gas in the ship’s fuel tanks leak into the Indian Ocean.
Fisheries minister Kanchana Wijesekera tweeted that the salvage company involved in the operation “has indicated that the vessel is sinking at the current location.”
These fears were strengthened when X-Press Feeders put out a statement in which they said that “there are now concerns over the amount of water in the hull and its effect on the ship’s stability.” It added: “Efforts to make a connection for towing failed after several attempts due to the tug’s movement caused by the swell.”
The operation was aborted for safety reasons, it confirmed.
Several eyewitnesses, including an agency photographer, said that the vessel’s stern was underwater.
Indika de Silva, Sri Lanka’s Navy chief on Wednesday said that the container ship is “facing an imminent risk of going down.”
The Sri Lankan government has launched a criminal investigation into the ship’s blaze and marine pollution as a result of it. It has seized the passpor

Sniffer dogs are a fifth more accurate at spotting Covid than rapid lateral flow tests, a study has claimed.
French researchers found trained German Shepherds and Labradors could spot 97 per cent of all coronavirus patients by sniffing armpit sweat.
For comparison, rapid tests — at the heart of No10's swabbing blitz — are thought to be 78 per cent accurate.
Dogs also offered 'instantaneous results', whereas lateral flow kits can take half-an-hour to analyse swabs.
Experts said dogs could be used in airports, train stations and other busy venues to sniff out infected people and prevent outbreaks.
Ministers are hopeful dogs will be deployed at crowded events in the near future in the UK.

Bitcoin's volatility was on full display: The decline had narrowed to below 10% in early afternoon trading. Bitcoin has lost about 40% of its value since April 13 when it hit a high of more than $64,606 per coin.
Before Wednesday, Tesla's decision to not accept the digital currency as payment for cars, along with concerns about tighter regulation of digital currencies, were major factors in the decline. The price is still up about 31% in 2021 and nearly 300% from a year ago.
Here's a look at Bitcoin and digital currencies in general:

The full list of guest stars for the Friends reunion was announced last week, with celebrities from David Beckham to Lady Gaga joining the original cast for the unscripted special.
As well as celebrities who love Friends, supporting cast members including James Michael Tyler (Gunther), Maggie Wheeler (Janice) and Elliott Gould (Jack Geller) will also appear in the special.
But Friends fans noted that one beloved cast member will not be making an appearance: Paul Rudd, who played Mike Hannigan.
The star joined Friends in its ninth season as the love interest for Lisa Kudrow’s character, Phoebe Buffay.
After having their fair share of ups and downs, Mike and Phoebe eventually got married in the final season.
One fan posted a crying emoji on Twitter, with the words: “No Paul Rudd on the friends reunion?? I don’t want it.”
“Yes i will be complaining all day long that paul rudd isn’t part of the friends reunion,” added another.
Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are all officially set to appear all together in front of TV cameras again for the special, which airs on HBO Max on 27 May.
