🎶10 Vinyl Slipmats 🎶
A slipmat is a circular piece of slippery cloth or synthetic materials placed on the turntable platter instead of the traditional rubber mat. Unlike the rubber mat which is made to hold the record firmly in sync with the rotating platter, slipmats are designed to slip on the platter, allowing the DJ to manipulate a record on a turntable while the platter continues to rotate underneath.

A vinyl record puck, also known as a biscuit, consists of melted PVC pellets in the shape of a hockey-puck between a label on the top and bottom. The puck is then compressed by the record press into the shape of a vinyl record.

On November 17, Memphis Record Pressing was just minutes away from starting a roundtable discussion among local independent record store owners before a packed house at the Memphis Listening Lab when we received word that Jared McStay, co-owner of one of our featured stores, Shangri-La Records, had passed away at the age of 57 from cancer. With nearly 20 years at the helm of Shangri-la and many more years as a label owner and member of numerous bands, Jared had a profound and lasting impact on the Memphis music scene. All in attendance were saddened by the news, but the show went on as Jared would have wanted. In this video excerpt from the night, the panelists — including Jared’s Shangri-la partner John Miller, Zac Ives and Eric Friedl from Goner Records , and Chris Braswell from River City Records — share their thoughts and memories of Jared. MRP offers deepest condolences to Jared’s family, friends, co-workers, and bandmates. He will be deeply missed.

About Memphis Record Pressing

Founded in 2014, Memphis Record Pressing (MRP) was originally a collaboration between Brandon Seavers & Mark Yoshida of Audiographic Masterworks (‘AGMW’, est. 1997) and Matthew Johnson & Bruce Watson of Fat Possum Records (‘FP’, est. 1992.) Having spent the better part of 15 years working together for CD manufacturing and related businesses, AGMW and FP teamed up to fill a much-needed gap in the resurging world of vinyl manufacturing. After acquiring a recently-defunct pressing plant in New Jersey (EKS,) MRP worked feverishly to build out the complicated but necessary infrastructure required to power vinyl production, while simultaneously scouring the nation in search of those with the knowledge to bring the aged machines back to life. All of the pieces fell into place in January of 2015, when MRP officially opened to the public.

In June 2016, MRP joined forces with GZ Media (GZ) from the Czech Republic, the largest manufacturer of vinyl records in the world. This partnership, along with the increased global attention on the vinyl resurgence, combined with the appetite of the major record labels to capitalize on vinyl’s new-found glory, has fueled MRP’s growth into a global leader in vinyl LP production. MRP has been in a constant state of expansion, growing from 15 employees in 2015 to over 100 employees in 2019, and has increased vinyl production from just under 1 million LPs in 2015 to an anticipated 4 million units in 2019.
