In Loving Memory of Aunt Alicia Jean (Rankin) Widdows (Skeeter to her brother)
Alicia's life was filled with love, joy, and an unwavering devotion to her family.
She was born on March 5th, 1930, in Nashville, KS, at the local hospital, to her parents Alice (Rudolph) Rankin and Henry "Sox" Rankin. Growing up on the Rankin Ranch of the Ridge Road in Barber CO, Alicia's childhood was marked by a close connection to nature and a strong sense of family values.
Alicia's early education began in the humble setting of a one-room schoolhouse on the Ridge Road. She later attended Sharon Grade School, where she would stay with her grandmother Emma Rankin during the week to attend classes. Her thirst for knowledge led her to further her education at Mt. Carmel Academy in Wichita, KS, the same school her mother Alice had attended.
While attending college at Kansas State University she met Robert Widdows and they married on January 27th, 1951. Although she left college early, Alicia's love for learning never ceased. Throughout her life, she remained an advocate for education, inspiring others to pursue knowledge and reach for their goals.
Bob’s work took them to many different places which enabled them to live in areas much different than her upbringing in Kansas. Especially living for quite a while in the Boston area before ultimately coming back to Kansas and settling in Ellsworth. While in New England she worked and volunteered at the hospital auxiliary.
In Ellsworth Alicia always hosted the best Thanksgiving dinners ever known. We’ll always remember the walks to the park after dinner where the strongest among us would climb the pole to ring the bell.
Alicia and Robert shared a beautiful life together, filled with adventure, travel, and a love for one another. They embarked on countless trips across the United States, camping and exploring all 50 states. Their shared passion for Kansas State University extended to their unwavering support as avid fans, holding season football tickets for many years. Alicia's enthusiasm for sports also extended to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, as she closely followed their games on television.
A true animal lover, Alicia held a special place in her heart for dogs. Their companionship brought her immense joy and comfort throughout her life. Additionally, her creative spirit shone brightly as she poured her talents into crafting and creating gifts, particularly during the holiday season. Her cherished handcrafted Santas became treasured keepsakes for everyone in the family.
Alicia's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She cherished the bonds she shared with her nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Her unwavering love and support were a constant source of strength and encouragement for those fortunate enough to know her.
Alicia now joins her loved ones who have passed before her, including Father Henry Rankin and Mother Alice, Husband Robert ”Bob” Widdows and brother, Charles Rankin. Though she is no longer physically with us, her memory will forever be cherished by her surviving family members, including her sister in-law, Kay Rankin, Hugh (Doni) Rankin, Colin (Terri) Rankin, Alicia (Fred) Van Ranken, John (Jeana) Rankin, Dennis, deceased, (Linda) Hemken, Doris (Michael) Gerik, Dolores (Jerome) Ewald, David Hemken, Diane (Fredrick) Stump, Debbie (Paul) Sontheimer, Julie (John) Martin, Tony Reali, Nancy (Chad) Forster, Steve (Mitzi) Widdows, Allen (Aleacia) Widdows, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
As we mourn the loss of Aunt Alicia, let us remember her vibrant spirit, her unwavering love, and her enduring legacy of family bonds. May her soul find eternal peace, and may we carry her love in our hearts as we continue on life's journey.
