Last week in Harrisburg, the committee on Urban Affairs discussed the housing crisis that we have on our hands. This was a hearing with every day people like us. Developers, Real Estate Agents, Service Provides and Non Profit Professionals who are testifying in front of our congressional leaders so they can understand the full scope.

Housing is a human right for all. But, for so many with a disability, it can be virtually impossible to find a safe place to call home.

It’s not always the money, but accessibility is a necessity.

Many people have asked about Accessible outdoor spaces… I have found many in 15 years. One of the things I missed most after my accident was being in the woods, so I do try and find ways to accommodate. Swarthmore College has a BEAUTIFUL walkway run by an arboretum. If you would like to spend the day visiting beautiful trees and flowers - it is free and completely open to the public!

Walks and Trails includes downloadable maps and directions for many walks and trails in the Borough and on the College campus. It also includes a link to download a smartphone app (AllTrails) that has all of this information available, plus GPS location.

What does the word “accessible” mean to you?

For me, and many others - housing “accessibility” is nearly impossible. Today - big companies are buying homes in stock to either fix up and sell at a much higher rate OR to rent, reducing home ownership options.

This is a huge hurdle for an individuals with a disability on a fixed income or older adults who are having mobility issues. My ask, is for my fellow residents to be aware of this issue. No one is exempt from trauma or growing old - then needing a place to live.

So how do I try and solve this? I continue to be persistent with the county. Housing stock is crucial. If there are any local developers, financial experts, agents, networks or non profits interested in teaming up to create ACCESSIBLE living, please DM!

Obtaining Medical Equipment is (most of the time) more tedious then anyone could imagine. The truth is, you can’t fully understand the process unless you’ve lived it- or have seen a loved one struggle without.

Caring hearts lending closet’s mission is to lend and/or distribute reusable medical equipment to the community of Delaware County. What you desperately need may just be a drive away!

“We are a medical lending closet providing reusable and sometimes single use equipment to anyone in need regardless of financial status. All of our inventory is donated. We only ask that you pass it on, or donate back to us to continue to help other.”

It can be incredibly frustrating getting your hands on certain pieces… however THIS is where community MATTERS!

Welcome to a space that has been much needed! As a 13 year paraplegic living in delco, lack of knowledge and resources available is an understatement. While there ARE some local organizations out there- I have yet to find a community, within my community, representing the people like me. This is my chance to change that.

While there are MANY topics we could discuss- housing is my main concern. As our communities continue to be built up, my concern for ACCESSIBILITY within housing rises. If it were only me, who needed accessibility in my living space, this fight wouldn’t be a battle I’d take on, however I know that I am not alone.

If you are someone who has had a hard time finding accessibility within housing- public AND private- please share your stories!! I’m sure I’m not alone.

Other then housing, I hope we can provide each other with great resources, activities and accessibile recreation ideas! This community also matters.
