In 2017, then Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. publicly pledged to elevate the Booker T. Washington Institute (BWI) to a junior college, recognizing the institution’s quality facilities, faculty, and visionary administration.

Speaking at BWI’s 88th Founder’s Day in Kakata, he emphasized that the government viewed BWI as critical to Liberia’s development and committed to working toward achieving junior college status for the institute as soon as possible.

Boakai highlighted the importance of BWI in addressing national challenges, such as the shortage of lab technicians revealed during the Ebola crisis, and noted efforts to collaborate with local and international partners to raise educational standards and introduce programs to train vital healthcare professionals.

He also recalled ongoing engagements with U.S. institutions, including Hennepin Technical College in Minnesota, aimed at upgrading BWI’s academic level.

Despite this strong commitment, as of 2025, BWI remains a technical institute without junior college status.

Given the critical role BWI plays in molding skilled professionals and supporting Liberia’s development goals, it is timely to remind President Boakai, now serving as Liberia’s president, to honor his 2017 promise and expedite the elevation of BWI to a junior college.

Such an upgrade would not only formalize BWI’s expanded academic offerings but also enhance its capacity to produce highly skilled graduates essential for Liberia’s socio-economic progress.

With President Boakai’s renewed focus on educational improvements and community college development, including agricultural programs for national self-sufficiency, fulfilling this promise would align well with his broader vision for Liberia’s educational and economic advancement.

The BWI administration and its stakeholders deserve continued government support and clear timelines toward this goal, ensuring that the institution can fully realize its potential as Liberia’s pride and a beacon of technical and junior college education.

Police Trains Community Watch Forum Members Amid Fire Incidents at Salala Rubber Corporation

Margibi, Liberia: March 28, 2025 —The Liberia National Police has initiated training for hundreds of Community Watch Forum members to bolster security at the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) Plantation in Margibi County's District #5, following a series of fire incidents that have raised concerns about the company's vulnerability.

The plantation is owned by Indian businessman Dr. Upjit Sinch Sachdeva, commonly known as Mr. Jeety, who acquired SRC in 2024 after violent protests led to its indefinite closure under previous management.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Patrick B. Kormazu disclosed the training during an interview in Kakata, emphasizing the importance of involving local residents in community policing to mitigate deliberate fire outbreaks.

He stated that continuous deliberate fire incidents have raised concerns, so the police has thought to get the community involved to minimize such occurrences.

According to him, the initiative has received approval from the national chair of Liberia’s Community Watch Forum Team.

Since Mr. Jeety’s acquisition of SRC from Socfin Group, the plantation has faced challenges despite efforts to improve workers' living standards and housing facilities.

Tensions persist among residents and workers, with some accusing Mr. Jeety of using his government connections to suppress dissent and intimidate critics.

While improvements in housing are underway, critics questioned whether his management aligns with community expectations.

SRC, Liberia's third-largest rubber producer, specializes in semi-processed rubber for tire manufacturing. Under Socfin’s ownership, the company faced allegations of poor labor practices, substandard housing conditions, and environmental violations, culminating in violent protests in June 2024.

Workers demanded better wages and improved working conditions, leading to widespread destruction of company's properties and its temporary closure.

Recent fires at SRC have caused significant damage, prompting heightened security measures. Despite government-assigned and private security personnel on-site, the plantation remains vulnerable under its current management. Community members have expressed fears about ongoing tensions and lack of accountability for past grievances.

As security training progresses, stakeholders hope for improved collaboration between SRC management and local communities to safeguard investments and restore stability.

Civil society groups continue to advocate for accountability regarding human rights violations under previous management, while tensions surrounding unresolved grievances remain a pressing issue for SRC’s future operations.

B**g, Liberia, March 13, 2025:: In a significant public address, Dr. Morgan S. Flomo Jr. has openly criticized the Boakai-Koung administration for its perceived shortcomings in governance, marking his first major statement since the 2023 general elections.

During a radio interview in B**g County, Dr. Flomo, a prominent figure in Liberian politics, voiced his concerns regarding the government's failure to fulfill its electoral promises to the citizens.

Dr. Flomo emphasized that the Unity Party-led government has not taken adequate steps toward job creation and economic improvement, which were central themes during their campaign.

"This administration is confused," he remarked, highlighting a disconnect between the government’s actions and the pressing needs of the population.

He argued that instead of focusing on tangible results, the administration appears to be operating as if it were still in opposition.

The former political candidate expressed disappointment at what he described as a lack of significant milestones achieved by the Boakai-Koung administration since taking office.

He urged the government to redirect its efforts toward addressing critical economic issues that directly impact the lives of ordinary Liberians.

"They need to prioritize 'bread and butter' issues," Dr. Flomo stated, calling for real economic benefits rather than what he termed "self-styled showboating."

Dr. Flomo's remarks resonate with many citizens who are eager for concrete actions that will lead to job creation and improved living conditions.

His criticism reflects a growing sentiment among the populace regarding the need for accountability and effective governance from their leaders.

As the interview concluded, Dr. Flomo reiterated his call for the government to adopt a more proactive approach in fulfilling its commitments to the people of Liberia, emphasizing that only through genuine efforts can trust be rebuilt between the administration and its constituents.

This public critique marks a pivotal moment in Liberia's political landscape as citizens continue to seek transparency and effectiveness from their elected officials in addressing economic challenges facing the nation.

United Methodist Church in Liberia Faces Deepening Crisis Over LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Property Disputes

By: Our Staff Writer
[email protected]

The United Methodist Church (UMC) in Liberia is embroiled in a profound crisis, marked by intense divisions over LGBTQ+ inclusion and church property disputes.

The conflict has led to police intervention, arrests, and a growing schism between traditionalists and those advocating for a more inclusive approach to LGBTQ+ issues.

At the heart of the dispute is the UMC's evolving stance on same-sex marriage, which has sparked a fierce backlash in Liberia.

The 2024 General Conference's decision to repeal the ban on LGBTQ clergy and allow same-sex marriages has ignited widespread protests and the emergence of breakaway factions.

The 72nd United Methodist Church in Paynesville has formally severed ties with the UMC, citing irreconcilable differences over LGBTQ+ inclusion and governance reforms.

The Liberia Annual Conference of the UMC has passed resolutions reaffirming the church's traditional stance on marriage and empowering the Board of Trustees to protect church properties.

However, tensions persist, with several churches resisting new pastor appointments and aligning themselves with the Global Methodist Church (GMC).

Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah, a founding member of the GMC, was arrested following a violent confrontation at the 72nd United Methodist Church.

Upon his release, Kulah condemned the UMC's leadership and vowed to resist efforts to impose same-sex marriage within the church.

In response, Bishop Dr. John Pena Auta of the GMC issued a pastoral letter reaffirming the church's stance against homosexuality.

He urged members to remain steadfast in their faith, emphasizing that the word of God is eternal and universal.

The crisis highlights the complex interplay between global religious policies and local cultural values, raising questions about the future of Methodism in Liberia and beyond.

As tensions escalate, the UMC faces significant challenges in maintaining unity across diverse cultural contexts.

As for challenges, Director Sherif said there are numerous challenges at the institute some of which she said are overwhelming to handle especially the deplorable nature of the structures with key emphasis on the staff quarters and the lack of administrative vehicles.

She explained that some of the issues are so grave that ignoring them could mean that the teacher training program could just be mal-functional.

She listed some of the challenges as delayed in approving and releasing of funding to the vendors that assist accessibility of necessary goods and services, inconsistent electricity supply, and overstayed and faulty electrification, lack of pipe bone water and limited water source, lack of or inadequate vehicle (s) for institute’s operations and limited or inadequate fund for the overall renovations of the institute’s facility.

Other challenges she named are the lack of modern utensils for cafeteria and shortage in local ones, lack of equipment like tractor machine for field workers to keep the campus clean, safe and secure, the lack of relevant apparatus to make the science lab functional, the lack of updated books in the library and community illegal incursion on the institute’s fixed asset (land) as well as the lack of land deed to claim ownership as government stewards etc.

Speaking on the plans, the director said in order to elevate the KRTTI to the much-desired teacher training level, her administration will focus on sound fiscal management to be considered to align with government policies and regulations.

In addition to her plans, Director Sherif states that her administration will focus on leadership development that will enable heads of departments to receive regular training on how to lead their teams effectively and manage departmental affairs, infrastructure and facilities, partnership and collaboration; and digitizing instruction amongst others.

According to the KRTTI Director, she believes in the power of teamwork and collaboration thereby encouraging all staff of the institution to take pride in their work and abide by the civil service standing orders that govern them.

She told the KRTTI workers that together, they will elevate the institute and ensure that it continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of education in Liberia.
