After moving to South Orange, Edith stopped teaching, but remained involved in many activities. She was President of her local League of Women Voters in the late 1960s, and a member of Women Strike for Peace as well as her local committee for a SANE nuclear policy (which later became Peace Action). As a member of Maplewood/South Orange Peace and Community Action she also worked on many petition drives and helped organize many speaker events (including an event at her home where civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, a key organizer of the 1963 march on Washington, spoke).

Robert J. Miller Oysterfest 2024

The 8th annual Robert J. Miller Oysterfest, a community health event for Melanoma awareness and fundraiser featuring live outdoor music and food, is back at The Woodland on September 7, 2024. In partnership with the Township of Maplewood, since 2015 this MUST SEE event and fundraiser has raised more than $150,000 to support awareness of melanoma and provide essential funds for melanoma research grants and MAPSO families in need.

New for 2024 is an international food celebration showcasing the unique flavors and styles of local MAPSO restaurants. In keeping with the tradition of this event, festivities will be held on Saturday, September 7 from 5-10 pm under tents at The Woodland, located at 60 Woodland Road in the heart of Maplewood Village.
Live music will be featured throughout the night from two bands: Hoi Polloi and Black Tie Groove.

Additional highlights for the adults-only event include an open bar, bagpipers, dining with local eateries and the popular oysters and raw bar. Tickets are $155 per person, $75 for young adults (21-25).

Adult Only Event - Must be at least 21 years of age to attend.

"The purpose of the event is to not only have fun but to 'demonstrate that our creative town needs an in-person movie theater,' says Angela Matusik, co-founder of the Maplewood Film Society. 'We want to attract potential investors while engaging our large movie-loving community,' echoes MFS co-founder, Lisa Cohen.

The historic Maplewood Movie Theater, which was open for 93 years in the heart of the village, closed during the 2020 COVID Pandemic. Attempts to lease the theater and reopen it as a cinema have been unsuccessful, and now the entire building is on the market for sale. The fate of the cultural landmark remains uncertain."

For one magical night, movie loving households in Maplewood, NJ will show the same film at the same time at outdoor screenings in over 15 backyards throughout the town.

It is especially noteworthy that it was a black artist gallery and prior to that there was only the Newark Museum as a place to see art. Gladys and her husband Sol Grauer provided the groundbreaking foundation for so many of the local artist galleries and venues that followed her. She was considered the matriarch of Newark Arts and had a momentous celebration of her life at the Newark Museum when she died in 2019."

Beemer, who spent part of her sophomore year hosting a music show on Rutgers Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM), worked as a music programming intern with the talent and music management department of MTV Germany.

“It's honestly been an amazing experience,” said Beemer, who started the internship in May and completed it in mid-July. “I mean, No. 1, it's all in German, so that's been a big challenge for me.”

After transferring to Rutgers as a sophomore, Beemer hatched a plan to spend time studying abroad – followed by a stint at MTV Germany.
